Good question - I'd be very interested if someone could nail what he's saying.

Btw, check out the "reach" on Liston's index finger on its own. Liston could be standing a foot away and still have your eye out with that loaded weapon. Worse still if he put some lineament on that fingertip.

My bad, I shouldn't be perpetrating such a myth, even if only in jest.

Well what ever he is saying if i was on the end of that pointed finger i would be damned well giving him my fullest of attention, with plenty of yes Sirs, no Sirs, so as he did not get more angry and lay those fists on me.

However I do believe this happened in Denver around about 26th December 1964 when he was arrested for drunken driving, now if so that was a not good combination, Mr Liston intoxicated with liquor, it would be prudent to call for back up i think, which it looks like the police did as I counted at least 9 cops in that clip.

 

Fancy being a policeman and having to apprehend Sonny Liston.

 

Some background: In 1961, around the time Liston moved from Philadelphia to Denver, the Denver Police Dept. was the subject of one of the worst police scandals in U.S. history. A gang of Denver cops --35 of them -- together with the sheriff of a bordering county was exposed for operating a burglary ring. They broke into citizens' homes and businesses for the purpose of robbing them, and the same cops committing the crimes investigated them while destroying crucial evidence. The gang, which committed 129 burglaries, only got caught after a witness saw a safe fall from the back of one of their getaway cars.

The department had a rogue cop named James "Buster" Snider who took a special delight in ticketing, arresting and targeting Sonny. For years afterward he bragged, once to me, that he clubbed Liston with his baton. Snider was eventually fired and later was charged with **** while working as a cop in another jurisdiction

I don’t know the particulars of this situation but if he was arrested for DUI when not drunk, I don’t blame him for being angry. If he was drunk, the rest of that is immaterial.

A bad cop can make a good arrest and vice versa.

 

Interesting. At first glance it appers Liston is saying " If you are going to lock me up I want my Ritz crackers..Ritz crackers."
