Are there any fighters who intrigue you or puzzle you enough to make you want to undertake to study them? I want to observe/study Tommy Loughran...fortunately, You Tube and maybe other sources on the internet have his best efforts for posterity, and most of them, if not all, are 15 rounders, and that's great with me as I want to observe closely his boxing technique, jab, footwork, ring savvy, etc., ....there are many others, but I'll start with Loughran, a magnificent lightheavy champion, and one of the finest pure boxers of all time.
So please, if you wiil, who are the greats who warrant your study and observation?

Just finished the Emile Griffith book, so will go over his films again. Carmen Basilio is the other I want to watch. What a contrast as to how both men departed. Carmen was highly articulate and modest, right to the end, despite his arduous career. While his fellow welter/middle World champion showed signs of his tough schedule around 30. What really caused the damage to Emile was the severe mugging by a gang of cowards long after his retirement. Anyway these 2 greats are well served on You Tube to keep them alive for us.

I confess crixus, that it was almost Emile Griffith that I chose to study,....and I think I will after I get done with Loughran,...and the thing about both men, there are plenty of 15 round decisions in their resumes, and to be honest, I love watching 15 round decisions.:nut I miss that 15 round distance so much, as I really sense the monumental quality of title fights from back in those days.

I've been meaning to delve into 60s middleweights in general (one of the many gaps in my boxing knowledge). Any particular fights (available on youtube) that you guys would recommend?

Been adding Battling Levinsky fights next-day reports to my sc rap-book on him last week or so. Now looking up a couple of Packey McFarland's opponents (Harry Trendall, Harry Brewer), not that they were great, but if you want to know more about a great fighter, you have to learn more about his opponents, their style, best wins, how did they look vs other men than Packey.

mr kk, I would suggest Emile Griffith be the focus of your research regarding 60's middleweights....starting with the fight that probably was responsible for making me a dedicated boxing fan, namely Griffith-Tiger l, a disputed (don't know why) verdict,..at any rate, a very close fight....and a brilliant achievement of Griffith's. No "junior divisions back then to make a half step up to the next division, no...Griffith came up all the way from welter to middle, ceded 10 lbs vs the strongest 160 lb champion, outboxed him and scored the first ever kd against the Tiger man....and Tiger's chin was the equivalent to Hagler's back then...thought to be impervious.
Check out the Griffith-Archer bouts, if you can, that is...i believe that only the rematch is on You Tube...don't know about any other source.
Then see Griffith-Benvenuti l and ll....and #lll is the "mystery fight" of their trilogy...was it even filmed?
No less deserving of your study would be, of course, Tiger-Giardello l and ll...really no less deserving of focus thab Griffith, on second thought. All were great bouts that I followed and kinda "grew up" with.

Nino Benvenuti would have been light-middle champion around then when you say griffith jumped from welter to middle..and there would have been a few before him in the 60s too....there were various junior titles in other weights as far back as the 20's.....but you know all that, right ?

Yes, you're right doug.ie....I guess the significance of Griffith's achievement is that he bypassed junior middle...I know that there was various junior weight classes in existence at that time...going back a ways too, but I plumb forgot about junior middle's time line. Yes, you're right, and Nino was indeed the jun. middle champ. Thanks doug.ie!
