I've had footage of the Pipino Cuevas/Felipe Vaca (Jorge's brother) exhibition for years and was always curious about it. It was added to Boxrec in the recent past and with that I was able to see what other fights took place that night. It shows as a NC however and was wondering if anyone knew why. It's nice to see so many Mexican boxing legends in one place doing something in their countries time of need. This would be the very tail end of many boxers careers. Rafael Herrera came out of a 10 year retirement for this card to score a 4 round MD. Carlos Zarate would also score a MD in his return bout after the Pintor bout. In yet another MD, an aged Ruben Olivares would score a draw in his second to last match ever. Felipe would continue on for only two bouts, losing to a young Nunn by knockout only three months after this card. Cuevas himself would trudge on until the end of the 1980's but with limited success. I was watching a little bit of the fight and thought Felipe reminded me a little of Jorge Vaca. Just checked online and he is the older brother of the former World champion. Felipe was a decent 2 time Mexican champ who lost when he took on the top tier men. Jorge started his career in a similar vain before getting a run of wins including knocking out Pipino in 2 before beating Lloyd Honeyghan. He was a short-lived champ and was destroyed by Simon Brown but somehow won 2 decisions over future middleweight champ, stopped a comebacking Mark Breland before being smoked in 1 by Roy Jones Jr. Somehow he soldiered on for another decade but never came close to scoring another notable victory. Fun to watch though.
I have collated a large data set of HBO reported fight night weight gains from around the last decade. The average increase from weigh in to fight night weights is around 8% of the weigh in weight. Therefore, assuming in his WW title fights Cuevas was in the low 150's in the ring, I'd guess he'd fight at LWW today, assuming he was the same weight in the ring as he was in reality. That said, fighters are typically more muscular today than in the 70's and early 80's, even below HW. So, it wouldn't suprise me if Cuevas added c.7lbs of muscle and fought at WW, rehydrating to the high 150's, were he around today.
