The problem with this question is that it's being served up through the modern boxing lens, which mandates that all prospects be spoon-fed opponents in order to protect that apparently all-important zero on their record. That's not how it used to be done, and fighters were better for it back then.

The trend of glossy undefeated records for title challengers coincided w/ the rise of televised boxing in the early 50s. Gil Turner, Marciano, & Chuck Davey were the forebearers of this trend, all receiving title shots w/in a year of 1 another.

It thankfully didn't take wider hold until the '80s/'90s though.
