I was a teenager when Johnny Persol burst on the scene and for about three years in the middle 1960s he was probably the most often booked boxing headliner at Madison Square Garden. Good-looking fighter, stylish, easy to like, brought flash and swagger -- and Patterson-like quickness -- to the ring.
I always thought he bore a resemblance to Emile Griffith, both superficially & even stylistically to some extent. Some footage of Persol if it hasn't already been posted: His drawn battle w/ dangerous puncher Henry Hank: This content is protected Good showcase win over Bobo Olson: This content is protected win over hw James J. Woody, during what was probably the best run of his career before Ellis derailed it: https://www.efootage.com/stream/e800/johnny-persol-vs-james-j-woody-in-boxing.105647.mp4
