So my uncle is an old school guy, he feels jt comes from the same ilk as gene tunny. He actually thinks they're related lol. So before I ask him, was there any similarities between these 2 great fighters?

Other than having a good defensive awareness their styles are very different. Toney employs a shoulder roll where he moves his hips to slip punches in the pocket. Where as Tunney would use small quick steps both circling and stepping away to keep out of range from being hit.

Offensively they both employ the jab and right hand effectively. So maybe that's a similarity

Yeah, their styles are not similar. They are both very hard to stop though and outstanind defensively.

None I can see Tunney relied on movement, countering and a quick jab. Toney was pretty static, using shoulder rolls.

Their last names sound somewhat similar.

Toney was defensive but a lot more in your face and willing to slug or pressure. He loved having phone booth battles and digging into the body. He was also a good operator against the ropes. Toney's head movement was better.

Tunney was a pioneer of the textbook outside guy using methodical footwork and a jab to maintain his preferred range. Had a great grasp on the fundamentals and wouldn't just stand in front of a guy like Toney.

Both had good chins, good defense, and a nice right cross but I can't think of too many other similarities. Very different approaches to boxing.

One uses footwork and one stands in the pocket. Not much similar except high boxing skills and IQ... and good beards.

I would love to put James in a time machine and bring him to Gene's family reunion to discuss if they are related.

Still a stretch but Tunney is more like a precursor to Michael Nunn.

Carpentier was nothing special in all-time sense, but Gibbons was very good. He could definitely outbox Toney.

I do think that out idea of Tunney's style gets a bit distorted by the Dempsey fights.

He normally fought a lot more aggressively, and employed mobility less.

Good point. How did he fight against Greb?
