No big fights in the immediate future. I have to admit the only bout that I'm really looking forward to seeing this year is Mosley v Mayweather and that's not till May.
At times like these, instead of turning away from the sport we love most, we must look deeper within its history. I live in the past right now, watching black and white fight footage from bygone eras, absorbing the wisdom and historical significance of the past. Things will line up in the future, as they always do. For now, if I have nothing great to look forward to, I go backwards in time.:bbb Boxing is forever with me.
i dont see the fascination with just 'big' fights though, i mean... ya its awsome to have some blockbuster fights... but theres plenty of interesting fights coming up, hell just in the upcoming weeks youve got Glen Johnson vs Yusaf Mack to see if Mack can get past the old vet Edwin Valero vs Antonio DeMarco, is 'Marco good enough to extend Valero the distance for the first time? Tomasz Adamek vs Jason Estrada, his biggest test at heavy so far, and a fight in the way of a good scrap against arreola Mario Santiago vs Bernabe Concepcion Kendol Holt vs Kaizer Mabuza Not to mention some more super six coming up later this year, how lopez and gamboa will continue their paths, if adamek gets by estrada there is arreola coming up, i think darchinyan will be rematching donaire towards the end of the year with shaw wanting that fight now, got pavlik vs martinez and of course pac/clottey and mayweather/mosley ya, of course if your a fan that lives off of big fights... your probably going to starve, get interested in fights other then mainstream attractions and for the most part youll have enough to satisfy you in between major box office clashes.
I'm not as intense about it right now as I was for the last 4-5 months, but that's just natural. You have phases, but Boxing is always close to my heart and once the big fights start coming off, everything will be well with the world again. I'm taking a lot of interest in the weekend's fight between Valero and DeMarco. Intriguing match-up.
Interesting is a subjective term. I find nothing interesting about Adamek/Estrada and Holt/Mabuza. I'm all for a good B type fight but neither one of those fights tickle the interest. Speficially Holt/Mabuza. They're not something that you sit there, see on the schedule and say "WOW! I gotta see that ****!" This is especially accurate with Adamek/Estrada. The fight is essentially a tune up for Arreola vs Adamek which is much more interesting. Mack vs Johnson I can take or leave either way. It's not going to define my friday night schedule. Valero vs DeMarco is going to be a great fight and that's interesting but it's just one fight. You don't HAVE to love all of boxing. You can sit there and watch it and appreciate it but you don't have to hype yourself up on it. It's like any other sport, it has its good times and bad times and in my estimation, we're looking at a bad time.
Dude I pay for Showtime and HBO for no other reason....It surely ain't for the movies! best $30 I spend every month!
The problem with boxing is there simply isn't as much elite depth at the top as there was 15-20 years ago. Sure quite a few big fights can still get made but not nearly as many as we should have in the sport. MMA is actually helping boxing since it is forcing promoters to make the big fights. 2009 was an very good year for the sport and while 2010 didn't start off as well as many have planned. Pac vs. Clottey with still be a very good fight with a great atmosphere and of course Mayweather vs. Mosley is all but finished up. I am also looking forward to the SMW division matchups with the Big 6 and Bute looking impressive in his last fight. I would like to see Pavlik vs. Williams, B-Hop vs Dawson or Adamek, and JMM moving back down to 135 and defend his championship but we can't have everything we want. The fact there is no dominant, exciting, elite heavyweights also hurts. I watched the outside the lines story about the Douglas vs. Tyson 20 years anniversary and I can't believe it has been that long. We could desperately use a Mike or Joe Louis type fighter to make things more interesting north of 200 lbs.
well... personally im looking forward to all those fights, but even if someone wants to look past those fights... what we have to look forward to as of this moment in 2010, not to even mention all the fights that will be coming up and signed as the year goes by Froch - Kessler Abraham - Dirrell Pac - Clottey Mayweather - Mosley Urango - Alexander Cotto - Foreman Khan - JMM (im not interested in this fight but many are) Pavlik - Martinez Adamek - Arreola Perez vs Mares Maidana vs Cayo and on the rumor mill Chris John just called out both Juanma and Gamboa Looks like Guerrero might be fighting Katsidis Bute and Miranda are still trying to work on a deal and theres much much more.... i dont know man, i guess i just dont see this barren wasteland people seem to be describing to me just because we dont have mayweather/pac to look forward to. its just tiring that every year numerous threads are made saying eather that its a bad year, or not a lot of interesting things going on, ect, ect.... and thats just the way boxing is, it heats and cools, heats then cools... its a natural thing. There is plenty, IMO, there besides mega fights to keep me interested. just my take - its been not even a full day since i made this post, and already two more good fights were announced Perez vs Mares Maidana vs Cayo so i added them to the list... no, they are not next week, but its for the people acting like theres nothing to talk about.
I'm not really having a hard time following boxing for the very reason you have stated. We will always have world problems but I watch sports as an outlet, so to speak. I love watching sports, especially boxing, because it entertains me. It gives me a breather from all the nasty things you see in the news.
Is anyone having trouble posting a new thread? I haven't been able to post a new thread since yesterday. I've sent two e-mails to the administrators, and I've received no response. I'm sorry for posting this message on this thread. Thanks.
No not really. Without the internet it would be pretty tough. Even, before I had the internet I would have a good idea of what fights were coming up. With the internet though it's easy though I know pretty much what fights will be on in Europe, Asia, whatever it doesn't really matter.
These times come and we always see fans who either claim to be "bored" of it or finding another sport or any of that nonsense. Boxing has like "seasons", you get two months straight packed with awesome fights and then 4 months of nothing, people usually think it's "dead" when that comes. Fact is, these guys can't fight every week, if you want street fights every week UFC is your home.
