Kovalev was set in his ways, cant teach an old dog new tricks. Kovalev's game is to shoot the jab like a jack hammer and follow it up with the occasional straight right. Thats basically what McGirt wanted from Kovalev vs Canelo but Kovalev simply could not deliver with effective jabs in that if he tried, Canelo was on the ready to counter them with power right hands over them.
Buddy literally got him to do the opposite. Focus more on just technique and the jab itself. Buddy said that he has the power, he has the KO´s, no need to worry about any of that. Buddy had the right idea and Kovalev did what he was asked of. Kovalev even said that Buddy had him work that lead hand so much that he could barely move it after the first day in the gym. Buddy!
