I watch a decent amount of boxing at bars, where the sound isn't always on. It's amazing how much the commentators can affect people's opinions about the fights. HBO has been really bad in the past few years. Devon Alexander-Kotelnik and Williams-Martinez were the most obvious. In PW-SM II they just completely ignored Sergio's early dominance until BOOM.
No I view commeatary as part of the crowd. If I score a fight I try to be as realistic as possible. Until they put judges in sound-proof boxes, I will keep the sound on. I don't score the punch=stat, I don'tscore the slow mo replay. I score live or the first time I see it on tape. I might rescore a fight to see if I still fell the same, but I fallow the same rules. Yes commators can be biased toward the "house" or network boxer. However the crowd is usualy biased to the same boxer. They can get a little over excited about a possible upset, sometimes over the house boxer. Mayweather/Casltilo comes to mind. I belive like the real judges you have to block it out (with the sound on) and form an opinion as to who won the round.
Only if it's extremely difficult, and I might add slow motion. Sometimes the commentators say something off and it makes you pay more attention.
No. But as stated, on second viewing if incredibly biased commentary was present and/or the fight was close, I do.
If I am watching for entertainment no, but if I want to really watch and understand what is going on the sound must be off. You can't effectively study tape with the sound on because the noise takes away from your concentration.
Mute if controversial. I most always watch with stereo sound as I like to hear the punches land. HBO are very biased towards their fighters but so are Showtime. I've both the Showtime and HBO versions of the Lewis Tyson beatdown. In the Showtime version, even watchimng now, showtime give the impression that Tyson was in the fight beyond the 1st round. HBO version....Larry Merchant was virtually cheering Lewis on, in fact I half expected him to be in Lennie's corner holding the spit bucket and wiping his brow!
i only ever mute a fight that i want to rewatch and score without outside influence this only happends for very disputed fights such as FLOYD CASTILLO
