All sources say it was a close fight and a good one so that is certain. The odds seem to have been exaggerated in the 'fix' article IMO and these ones explain why lamotta was favrouite. And nothing else mentions foul play?
It didn't look like a dive to begin with for me personally, that iron's out any wrinkles for me. LaMotta's status as favourite doesn't need explaining though, look at where the two men were in their respective careers.
Do you not think them Newspapers are enough? Thanks. It's just odd that one newspaper was adament it was a dive. Although I am sure it was not a dive. Yes fair point also I think the odds were exaggerated in the 'fix' Newspaper article anyway.
He was mostly a fringe contender, but floated in and out of the top 10 in '40 and '41. After Billy Soose relinquished his MW title, he beat Reeves (who was just coming off his two wins over LaMotta) to break into the top of the LHW rankings. (Shortly after that, Jimmy Bivins beat Soose to put himself atop the rankings.) Soose outpointed Reeves clearly and dropped him along the way. Funny enough, Soose outweighed him by several pounds in that fight, meaning Reeves really wasn't more than a super-middleweight himself.
Been combing through Ezzard Charles' amateur career and Jimmy Reeves is a name that comes up again and again as a top Light-Heavyweight amateur. Seems to have been pretty highly regarded and of a similar stature to Charles. Interestingly, Charles was supposed to travel to Europe for some bouts, as an amateur, but could not make it so Reeves subbed in. However, I don't know if Reeves subbed in as a Light-Heavyweight or if he took Charles places as a Middleweight, as I would have had to pay for the newspaper clipping. If he did take Charles place at Middleweight it seems odd that he would compete (at a very high level) at Light-Heavyweight, but not challenge at his natural weight. Perhaps Charles was better and he knew it, maybe they fought?
Talk about a blast from the past! I saw this thread and thought, "how interesting, how did that get to three pages without my noticing?" Thanks for the info GP.
No problem McGrain. Its just pretty minimal research on Reeves, so the details aint 100% as I am much more interested in Charles. Just thought I'd share, to show Reeves wasn't just some random contender.
Reeves was a highly decorated amateur, but never really lived up to that promise as a pro. He peaked very early in his pro career, winning a decision over ex-MW champ Solly Kreiger to break into the LHW rankings after barely even a year, but was subsequently exposed as having a weak chin & went on to be KO'd numerous times in his career. The wins over Kreiger & LaMotta collectively marked the high point of his career, & his ceiling. His last win of any note was over Nate Bolden a few months after the 2nd LaMotta triumph. By the time of the 3rd LaMotta fight, he was already on the way down, if not outright washed up.
