Also, this is the only action shot of Langford I could find, so if anyone has an address or better yet, some photographs they feel like posting, i'd be much obliged.
1909. Hague was coming off a fine win vs Gunner Muir too. http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=40136&cat=boxer
There is an interesting story behind that fight if I may. Langford was originaly scheduled to fight Jack Johnson for the London Athletic club and William Iron Hague was brought in as a late sub. Hague was sort of the Danny Williams of his era. Terific power quite talented but verry poor motivation. He asked his manager who Sam Langford was. The manager replied that he was about 5' 6'', 180 lbs and was second only to Jack Johnson in the world. Hague laughed at this and said that there was no need to train because no 180 lb man was going to lick him. He made good on his promise not to train much to the frustration of trainer Bob Fitzsimmons. When the fight came about he of course got destroyed.
Good story. Although you **** me off more often than not I'd be the first to admit you're invaluable to the Classic Forum. You are a provider of memorable nuggets.
I didn't want my post to be 100% complimentary. I don't go around saying "You're great" to people I usually don't get along with. :hey
