Winning gold is usually a gateway to financial success for many boxers, but every now and then you come across an accomplished boxing Olympian who never bothered to turn pro.

This guy Roberto Cammarelle was a gold winner at the Beijing Olympics, as well as a world amateur champion in the super heavyweight division. However, a quick google search shows the he has zero pro record.

I admit I don't follow amateur program that much, but can someone that does educate me on this guy and why he never bothered to go professional.

I've always wondered this. I don't think his abilities would have translated to more than a top 10ish pro, but still, he could have banked a few million if his career was done the right way. Never understood why he didn't go pro. Did he make money from endorsement deals in Italy? I hope he got some kind of financial benefit, he was definitely an ATG amateur super HW.

From my research yes he does some endorsements in Italy but still that's nothing compared to the accolades and financial incentives that comes with being heavyweight champion.

The explanation I've always come across is he likes his job as a cop.

He is a state police officer. He receives a handsome annual sum from the government to be a top amateur, plus bonuses for winning things like Olympic or tourney gold medals - all on top of his already upper middle-class salary from being a cop (and the Polizia di Stato are very encouraging of his amateur career and permit him plenty of time off to accommodate training)

He likes & believes in being a cop, and would probably make significantly less in the pros (unless he became HW champion) than as cop + elite amateur boxer, and he's loyal to Italy's national amateur team and is a guide and mentor for the younger members.

He boxes for love of the game and pride in his country, not financial need. Take away the sponsorship & endorsement deals and the stipend for being part of the Italian team and the winning bonuses, and he's still got a comfortable living doing what he loves anyway.

No incentive for him to make the jump.

He gets paid as an amateur and the pro scene in Italy is bad.

He doesn't need to fight in Italy. The pro scene is Russia is not good either but look at Povetkin and Kovalev.

There is a large Italian American community in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and so many other places in the country. Cammarelle will have no problem quickly building a cult following if marketed correctly. By that I mean fighting in New York and New Jersey metropolitan areas. Educating the public about his amateur accomplishment. And,I don't know, may be have him hang with Pauli Malignaggi or something.

Trust me, once he garners some attention here in the State, the Italian press will catch on. Before you know it the guys blows up.

Mind you the guy is from Italy, not some third world shythole.

He likes where he is. His family and job are there. He coaches the new recruits on the Italian national team, and is adored there in ways he never would be anywhere else.

Did none of that sink in before? There is no reason for him to leave Italy or go pro. He flat out doesn't want to.

He isn't motivated by money or by personal glory (just the glory he can bring the Italian national team and help breathe life into their domestic amateur scene)

    No it doesn't sink in.
I'm sensing some bytchassness in him. Is he hiding something? Why limit yourself to being a local hero when you could conquer the world.

You won a gold medal so you could do commercial and teach boxing to your local club? Whata fock?

Hiding what? He took on and consistently beat the best heavies and super heavies in the world for an entire generation. His list of conquests is bananas. The only guy that ever had Cammarelle's number was freaking Alexander Povetkin.

He only ever wanted to bring pride to Italy and inspire the next crop of boxers from his country, and he succeeded at both. He considers himself a cop who boxes on the side, not the other way around. He's very happy with his life.
