I read his book "Weigh-In the Selling of a Middleweight" and enjoyed it tremendously. He tells of his fighting days in the 1960's and fights with the likes of Benvenuti, Monzon and others. He also talks of the seedy side of boxing such as fixed fights, etc. I've googled and found virtually nothing about him. i was wondering if anyone here had any memories, personal encounters with him or his trainer, Joe West. I don't even know if either are still alive.
He was a name guy but more of a regional fighter type guy, like a Boone Kirkman. He really never did have a national following. His comments about being in the ring with Monzon are truly classic. Especially how Carlos was a guy that made you throw punches you know you shouldn't be throwing against him. You seldom hear about boxers confessing to an opponent just making/forcing them to do the wrong thing during the fight but not being able to do anything about it. And you sure don't see it attributed as a skill either, but it sure is an important one to have.
Scott had two tko victories over an old and faded Denny Moyer, and was awarded a shot vs Nino, and was dq'ed. I'm aware that he was ko'ed by Monzon, but I don't know too much about that fight. He did have a grandma who made his ring trunks and robe..that was pretty unique.
I enjoyed the book. My brother saw it a flea market and bought it for me knowing I was a huge boxing fan, '92 or '93 I think. Anyway, I really didn't know who he was until I read the book. Again, good book.
