Anybody still feel Golovkin vs. Pirog in 2012 would have been 50-50?

I recall that fight almost being canceled due to Pirog's injured back. He didn't want to cancel the fight, because it was at home in Russia. I didn't think he looked sharp. He was even hurt with a body shot at one point, but still won clearly.

Yep! 'You are right! Pirog had more problems with his back than with Maciel in their encounter.Still,at that time it was quite amazing that he went 12 rounds with Maciel and beat him as his health caused him serious problems then.

Precisely my point. He wasn't at 100%, and Maciel is a beast (and was motivated on the night) and Pirog still left no doubt.

Yea... no. After 35 there is an inevitable loss of speed, reflexes, power (not strength), stamina. You can only slow the decline. It can't be stopped. Its biology.

    Hopkins.

    Mayweather.

...and before you say "yeah but they are legendary gym rats" - since when isn't GGG?

He is probably the closest thing we have active to a PBF or BHOP in terms of 365 day training discipline.

mayweather and Hopkins don't rely on power and offense Golovkin styles ages quicker then those defensive fighters. The defensive fighter can have more years because they don't rely on aggressiveness
roy and Hopkins is a perfect example

Both Hopkins and Mayweather were better before 35 than they were after 35. Robert Allen who fought early 30s Hopkins and then fought late 30s Hopkins said it was just night and day. He said Hopkins was a shell.

Pirog was unique . He was very much capable of beating GGG .

With that said I predict GGG TKOs Pirog in 9 rounds .

Does anybody else think looking back that Pirog has some similar stylistic characteristics to Kovalev?

Maybe Kovalev took some inspiration from Pirog when molding his style.

Golovkin isn't exactly Basilio or Gatti. He's a boxer - a middleweight Lomachenko with power, basically.

I think DJ from yesterday would be a 50/50 fight with the Pirog we saw during their first fight. DJ's power from than until now is improved significantly so I don't think Pirog would walk through his shots as he did that night.
Back to GGG vs Pirog, I think Pirog comes in strong and this would ultimately be his undoing against GGG who would connect with something huge as soon as he found his range.

Both managed to be not merely title holders but arguably the best in their divisions past the age of 35.

No way is the Executioner of Allen I better than Popkins who beat Tarver and Pavlik. He matured like fine wine.

He's better than Loma. Pirog GG would've been a good fight. A pickem fight to me then. Pirog was a big, wirery mw.
