He WAS hard done by several times. Apart from Macklin I do t think he was done any favours at all. It's a myth. Don't say l don't LIKE Murray....I just have recognised from the start that he wasn't nearly as good as his British fans were hyping him up to be when he came on the scene. For some reason he captured the imagination of sky and the fans and was elevated far too high for his ability level.
Murray has had to do it the hard way. He's worked very hard for every opportunity and as had to travel to Germany twice, Monte Carlo & Argentina for his world title shots. Some boxers are fancied and have opportunities handed to them. Murray has never had that. Despite what you say, Murray was a quality, big, strong middleweight. Unfortunately, stepping up to super middleweight as taken away the 'big' and 'strong' part of his armour. He was a lot smaller than Groves for example. He's an unfulfilled talent but he can only look inward for the answers to why that is because he's rarely let his hands go.
I agree with a lot of that but he didnt let his hands go at critical times in fights - like sturm & sergio for 2 reasons. 1. He couldnt trust his engine and knew he would gas if he did. 2. Using his huge arms as a shield to hide behind is central to his strategy in all his fights. Murray is a good fighter with a very definite ceiling. Take away his physical attributes of size and strength and the rest of his game was/is British level at best. Given his limitations he has done very well for himself. My issue was that he was being ridiculously overrated a few years back by people who failed to recognise his weaknesses.
Is it just me, or is there an abject lack of well wishes for Gutknecht around this board? Personally, all thoughts on Groves as a fighter and his career past or present are on hold until we find out the outcome (and hopefully progress) of Gutkneht's condition.
you need a straightjacket and padded room my friend. i'm a "pri*k" (assuming thats what you meant) for the fact i like watching one of our most skilled boxers loool
Great post, couldn't have said it better. I'm a fan of Groves, have followed him since he turned pro and enjoy watching him fight... rarely is he in a bad fight. If as expected he faced Chudinov next, I do think we'll see him win a world title but in order for him to win and stay at that level he still has to tighten up on his flaws. He has a fantastic jab and can bang with that right hand, especially when he whips it in around the guard. However, he still gets caught too easily which given his judgement of distance when on the offensive and his solid jab... it's odd and shouldn't be happening as often as it does. He can also look ragged and wild when looking to get his hooks off. I'm not one who massively jumps on the 'Groves has a **** engine, he gasses after 6...' bandwagon. From what I've seen of him, he can box at a harder pace than we've seen from say a James Degale who we've seen take rounds off, sit on the ropes etc during fights. We've seen Groves box at a solid pace against Murray, Jack and Gudknecht, throw over 1000 punches against Rebrasse but because of his stance and the fact he's a pasty white kid that reddens up easily, he looks more puffed out than he actually is.
