Anyone think he beat Calzaghe and beat JT twice? If BHOP was officially 52-2-1 what affect would it have on his ATG status?
I think he beat Calzaghe, and beat Taylor once. In the other he practically handed the first half of the fight on a plate..... ala Margarito vs Williams.
Hopkins is a great fighter but I reckon he lost all three through inactivity ( although I wouldnt have complained had he beaten Calzaghe that was as close as you like ! ) had he beaten Calzaghe his staus would be raised , not that I dont rate JT but he had alreayd made his tewnty defences anyway so his MW profile was as high as it was going to get ( short of a time travelling Hagler or Monzon showing up , and losing !)
he could be...but there is NO WAY he got robbed in any of the three fights...he didn't throw punches...I thought he lost to JC and JT the second time clean..the first fight was a draw at best for bhop
Against Taylor, Jones, Calzaghe he is 0-4 The only debatable fight is the first Taylor fight as you could score it a draw but I still had Taylor 7-5 and I scored it objectively.
Dont think it makes a huge difference to his overall standing, unlike someone like Glen Johnson who's record could look completely different if you gave him the fights that were very close or he was clearly robbed.
I think he did enough to beat Taylor in one of their fights. He lost to Calzaghe. Too much holding, grabbing, clinching. If he would have actually fought and thrown punches he would have won.
If Hopkins had beaten Taylor in the first fight it's quite possible that he never would have moved up in weight. He quite possibly may have retired then. So his ATG status may well have been lower had he been given the decision against Taylor.
I thought he won the Calzaghe fight, and had one Taylor fight a draw and the other a win. So I personally think he is unbeaten since the Jones fight. None of them were robberies, (though how that one judge gave the 12th round to Taylor boggles the mind,) but I do find it odd that such a great fighter had the only three close fights in his career go against him. I bet it's pretty rare to never have gotten the benefit of the doubt for such a great fighter. It's somehow fitting considering though, considering the way he struggled for everything he got.
Calzaghe just piled up too many rounds with volume punching. And Hopkins looked befuddled by the end. It might have come down to one point, but Calzaghe got that point and deserved to eke out the win. Taylor: probably 1, 1
