ive just started doing krav maga training. i normally do boxing but thought id give something different a go. it seems quite good coz a lot of it focusses on real life self defence like stopping someone attacking u with a knife and disarming them. but some of the routines are so difficult to remember. has anyone else done it
I've done a little bit. One of the things I liked about the particular branch that I tried out was their philosophy of stopping an attack, immediately/simultaneously counter attacking and then extricating yourself from the situation as quickly and safely as possible. The instructor was excellent, very switched on, with no delusions of heroism or invincibility.
my instructor is an ex romanian army sergeant major, half the time you cant understand him but he seems to know what he's talking about. im ok with the puching side of things but he keeps saying my bodys too tense when im doing kicks and groundwork i dont know how
I've done a bit, it's mostly good for a real life situation to get away. The classes I went to focused more on staying and getting back on your feet
yeah u just wear a groin guard, and obviously they use rubber knives for practising how to avoid getting stabbed. a lot of the techniques are really compex though. they say u would only attack the eyes if your life was at risk so we havent practised this. but it is difficult simulating a real life fight
Don't like this part. When your heart rate sky rockets your motor skills diminish, techniques should be as simple as possible to ensure you can still complete them when you really need them.
I've been interested. But it's a thin line between learning something useful and it just being glorified karate. Also how do you know your trainer actually knows his ****? Could be any mug teaching you who hasn't had a fight in his life. I know a lot of martial arts schools hire random people to teach classes.
Girlfriend's brother was in the IDF, he showed me a few moves lulz It's pretty dangerous, although he said it's done in a completely different way in the Israeli Army than in classes you'll get in Europe/US
I watched some videos on youtube... I'm not sure about it tbh. You can't spar properly for starters. Watch Krav Maga sparring and you'll just see two idiots trying to kickbox. And like I said previously, you dunno how good the trainer is. There's classes around where I live who have the typical martial arts set up, hire out a school gym, charge a ridiculous amount, teach you absolute bollocks and profit. But the main thing is you cannot practice this stuff. Krav Maga is basically from what I can gather fight dirty then GTFO. You can't practice eye gouging and you can't properly practice knife attacks. And typically like a lot of martial arts the sparring looks like acting.
It IS the most effective form of self-defence for real-life situations where somebody comes at you with a weapon, or a fight where somebody is trying to seriously hurt you - this is actually why it doesn't really cross over well to sparring, because the whole point is to do max damage, eg: guy swings at me with bottle, i break his wrist and ribs, then put the bottle in his throat. This isn't the sort of stuff you want to be doing outside the nightclub, cos then you get 15 years in prison The thing is, to get to the level of proficiency/comfort with the techniques required to actually be effective in a real-life scenario requires the type of training you're not really going to get in a class full of middle aged women. I still maintain that boxing is one of the best forms of self-defence for any given street-fight scenario. The chances of most people ever actually being in a situation where them lethal Krav Maga techniques are necessary are slim
There's different techniques for different sectors. Training for the army they'd teach lethal techniques to kill the enemy. Security guards would be taught self defence and restraints. A civilian would train just self defence. The worst you'd probably learn is to break a few bones (maybe) or poke someone in the eye. It's about hurting them and getting away not stabbing someone in the throat with a bottle.
