22 November 2008 at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas:

    RICKY HATTON

    vs

    PAULIE MALIGNAGGI

    for the IBO light-welterweight title.

    Hatton
    Age: 30
    Height: 5'7 1/2"
    Reach: 65'
    Record: 44-1(31)
Best wins: RTD11 Kostya Tszyu, KO4 Jose Luis Castillo
Recent form: UD12 Juan Lazcano - Wide margin of victory did not tell the whole story, Hatton was rocked and hurt at times. He fought well, but the Hatton of a couple of years ago would surely not have had this trouble with this guy.

    Malignaggi
    Age: 27
    Height: 5'8 1/2"
    Reach: 70'
    Record: 25-1(5)
Best wins: UD12 Lovemore N'Dou, UD12 Herman Ngoudjo
Recent form: SD12 Lovemore N'Dou - Unimpressive showing by Malignaggi against a guy he had dominated a year earlier.

Who will win the latest instalment in the UK v US battle?

I'd quite like Ricky Hatton to win as I think his fans are a bit special the way they follow him, and I know many don't, but I appreciate his swarming, bodypunching, infighting style. I'm really looking forward to seeing if Floyd Sr has improved Ricky's relatively poor defence and head movement. I think if he has Paulie could be in for a hard night.

However, there's no way I'd count Malignaggi out. He showed immense heart against Cotto, and if he can stand up in that situation he can stand up against anything. Paulie has a great reach advantage over Ricky, and I think Malignaggi does have a great performance in him. You can't rule out him outboxing and frustrating Ricky on the back foot.

I view this as a real 50-50 clash. If the Hatton who fought Lazcano turns up, I see a Malignaggi win. If Floyd Sr has improved Ricky's game and Ricky has got over his loss to Mayweather Jr, I see a Hatton win.

Either way, it's going to be close, exciting, and it's going all the way to the final bell for sure.

I'm going to go with a Hatton SD. But who knows...

    Thoughts/opinions??? :bbb

It depends on how he looks v Malignaggi. If he wins, then who knows. If he loses badly, I think he should retire. I think he has a couple left, not many, even if he does win.

Haye-Barrett and Hatton-Malignaggi will be better fights IMO. I can't wait for both! I'm confident Haye will do it, but I really dunno about Ricky v Paulie.

I would be the happiest man on the planet if Pac won, but I just can't see it happening at all. I think Oscar stops him in the middle rounds, not that that's any great achievement considering the size difference.

Hatton by very convincing UD. I'm not a huge fan of him or of his Man City football supporters fanbase (they're a disrespectful mob with a superficial knowledge of boxing at best) but I feel that alot of the criticism that Hatton gets is unjust: he is much more than a small John Ruiz thats for sure.

Slicksters can give him problems, but I don't think PM is all that good in this respect and unlike Mayweather or Collazo, he doesn't possess any sort of dig to gain Hattons respect...I think Hattons quite underrated at cutting off the ring and I expect him to smother Paulie and to batter him down the stretch...

Lets face it, PM's biggest claim to fame still seems to be getting brutalised by a weight drained Cotto at 140.... furthermore his recent form has been pretty poor although one could argue that he underestimated Ndou after having beaten him with utter ease the first time around....

Still, there are some question marks with Hatton. Has his lifestyle caught up with him adversly affecting his punch resistance and stamina? Some might point to the recent Lazcano fight as recent evidence of this....

With that said, my prediction remains Hatton by UD in an entertaining scrap.

Hatton has the clear edge in power - Malignaggi only has 5 KOs in 25 wins!! But that doesn't mean a Hatton victory is assured, Paulie is a very quick, tough, skillful boxer. It's going to be a good fight and a close fight IMO.

Hatton by late TKO or UD. Just don't see Malignaggi having the power to back Hatton off, Hatton will be the aggressor in this fight and I believe Mayweather Sr. will show some serious improvements in Hatton's defense, movement and aggression. Malignaggi will look good early and by round 3 Hatton will start to shine.

    Who has Malignaggi fought really?

Only Cotto and he got beat!

I think we're gonna see Hatton do a number on this fella!

Will be good to see how Hatton fights after his short stint with Mayweather Sr, seeing if theres any significant changes. Should be an interesting fight nonetheless, im also looking forward to seeing how Haye looks in his fight at heavyweight, as a real heavyweight.

A strong (yet largely derided) performance against Lazcano earlier in the year puts Hatton in a good position for this fight. His change of trainer may provide the impetus needed for a third stage to the Hatton legacy (the WBU years, the Kostya Tszyu years and now maybe the legend years?). Malignaggi may feel the wrath of a rejuvenated Hatton who rather than recklessly throwing hooks goes back to jabbing his way inside and slaughtering his opponent once he's there. Or, the sacking of Billy Graham could be the last straw for a Hatton that has lost his motivation. His entrusted fitness regime is no longer a part of his preparations and maybe that will take its toll against a fit but limited opponent. There are question marks over this fight, not because Malignaggi poses any real threat, but because we just do not know where Ricky's head is at. A long summer of holidays and comedy tours are not ideal preparation for a title fight but taking on arguably the best coach on the planet may balance that out.

With that in mind, the result may not be a foregone conclusion, but if Hatton turns up in prime condition then he shouldn't have too much trouble. Malignaggi is quick and the only danger for Hatton is that he could get cut by such a sharp puncher. I would imagine that the first four rounds may be a little cagey as Malignaggi tries to step in and out at pace, catching Hatton and getting out of range before too much damage is done. However he wont be able to keep this up for long. Hatton is an animal at light welterweight and his strength should not be underestimated. Hatton will wear his opponent down with the usual barrage of body punches and clinches. The fight will turn after the fourth in favour of the Hitman and the 'Magic Man' will not have an awful lot left to give.

I go for Hatton by UD.
