Anyone else find the trend for prefixing with "Team" really naff?

NOt strictly a boxing thread but hey it's the Olympics as well, and there's boxing (of sorts) in that. And this was something I picked up on when Hatton was fighting FMM.

It might just be me being a miserable git, and I'm not sure if this trend is a British thing or if you get it elsewhere but..... I find the way that for example the Hatton camp is called Team Hatton, or the British Olympic squad is called Team GB, really ****ing pathetic.

It's that modern, shallow, cod psychology/ marketing bull**** whereby some git somewhere has decided that by adding Team to the name and replacing the way anyone normal would refer to them you can somehow magically instil a sense of unity that otehrwise wouldnt be there. which is of course absolute bollucks. Of course it's now par for the course and sports news love using it. everythings Team somthing or other. I imagine the Ryder cup squad will be Team Europe.

Anyone else have such irrationally strong thoughts on the matter or am I alone?

I actually quite like it, mainly because how sportsmen perform is (almost always) down to a Team effort. Spreads the credit around.

For a boxer for example, it's the guy that organises the sparring, the guy that sorts out and cooks his diet, holds the pads, arranges and promotes the venune, gets his gear ready, helps decide on tactics, makes provisions for equipment, handles his finances even...it's a team.

Since virtually none of us know exactly what choices and input and general degree of control a boxer has over how they fight, how they train and even who they choose to fight, using Team So-and-So is a good catch-all in my opinion.

in germany there was quite some controversy a couple of years ago in cycling, because of "Team T-Mobile". they prohibed this prefixing to get called "T-Mobile Team". laughable.

    i don't care at all.

Pretty much a cosign on my part. Yes the boxer is in the ring alone, but there is a lot that goes into his prep that he may or may NOT be able to do himself.

A lot of boxers will refer to their trainers and cornermen as their team, why the **** should that bother you? Last I checked, there is active boxer who trains by himself. Having your trainer, your cornermen, your sparring partners and friends, it is a team. Sure you may be the one in the ring, but you should still honor the people who supported you in doing so.
No one becomes the best at something without ever recieving help. You should always value the good people that elevated you to excel, especially when they play a direct part in your efforts. They are your team

There's no right answer to this question is there? :huh

Can I mitigate my answer? It's Calzaghe. I'm not blinkered when it comes to some of the criticism, but some of it I think is excessive and some of it down right moronic. Let's leave it at that!

I know there's plenty of arguably more worthy candidates out there (in terms of what they are doing right now) but I dont want to fudge the reply by giving lots of names. and, contrary to a lot of people, as a British person I'm enjoying the last few years of his career (bar the Manfredo farce) so I wont change my answer just yet.

Doesnt mean I'll excuse "Team Calzaghe" !
