Good post. I think all types are needed, that is why guys like Mr Garfield & Mr BB are so well liked, as well as all the younger guys that have to watch you tube to see the fights.
Wow! How did you ever find this. This was way back when I was so compassionate to my fellow poster as I tried to steer him or her to the light of discovery in boxing. 57 when I wrote this from my ivory tower, from which I pissed on the peasants.
Well at least you seee Rough it's not just you. I apparently disparage everyone. But I do like you Rough. Always have. Always will. Even if you are dillusional about Steel
life is cyclical! The forum today complains about the same thing 9 years later and back then they longed for the pure and original forum lol. I remember when.....has been used for centuries! My Pop Pop always told me the good ole days were not as good as people try and make them out to be. There were douchebag posters years ago and there are douchebag (is that allowed?) posters today. People don’t change all that much in spite of the changing of times. Modernists miss out on and refuse to see the greatness of the past, and classicist’s miss out on and refuse to see the greatness of today! My advice enjoy life and don’t be like them.
Well, from my point of view, the forum actually seems better moderated than it seemed before. No more fools like Bkackhercules or whatever. And people shouldn't complain. Today is the best time ever to be a boxing fan IMO. Almost limitless info on even the most obscure fighters.
Great post. I admit I'm a bit more of a classicist than a modernist in my preferences, but I also have a great deal of respect for those who currently put on the gloves. One of the best parts of the sport is the rich history, combined with a vibrant scene in the present. Without either of those elements, we'd be much worse off.
Been watching boxing for thirty five years. You will always get different opinions. You will always have trolls. Shame but comes with the internet.
Wow, I could' ve wrote this. Boxing has regressed and it's plain to see. Someone posted a video on Duran and Braxton, basically on their abilities to slip and counter against true world class competition. If anyone has any doubts about world class fighters today, vs yesterday have a look at those videos. Than tell me the fighters capable of doing that in today's game. One of my favorite ways of judging how good a fighter is is how quickly a counter comes. Is the fighter jumping in and out wasting a lot of energy (Lomo) or is the fighter slipping the punches with head movement and therefore always in position to counter effectively with very little energy wasted, like most great fighters 30 yrs and beyond had the ability to do . Effective body punching , angles, punching techniques. Even the different styles of fighters that were very common one doesn't see in today's game. Where are the great brawlers? Skilled stylists ( "Cuties"or defensive specialist, fighters that usually couldn't punch , but seemed to be able to avoid most rds fired from a Ak-47 fired at close range) The menacing punchers , the skilled boxer punchers that seemed to have mastered all phases of boxing in today's game? Most fighters today usually fight the same way just at different skill levels. That tells me coaches are assembly lining fighters as opposed to finding what they did best and than having them master that ability. If coaching were the same yrs ago, we wouldn't have had a Pepp, a Marciano, Frazier, Ali Foreman ( Think about this especially with Foreman , here's a man capable of lifting cattle, possibly the strongest man to ever lace them up, fist the size of a small pumpkin, why would he be forced to fight in a style like Ali, when with his natural power and strength he could remain flat footed used that great physicality push/maneuver his opponents off balance, nail them before they reset with devastating power.) Trainers had the ability to recognize what worked best for that INDIVIDUAL fighter and built open it. 30 yrs ago and beyond. Most Colleges had boxing clubs, same with all the US Armed Services, their was a boxing club ( Usually a very good one that was at least within driving distance, like locally 5th street, J.Obrien, Varricks, etc. Now, I don't think any Colleges have boxing programs, Armed Services are phasing it out, most "real" boxing gyms are closed. ( the one without Cardio boxing, Karate,UFC etc) Fighters today are getting in the pro game much older than in the past. Their were very few World class. pro fighters that got in in the game in their mid to late 20's. Even ones that had an extensive amateur background. Boxing has regressed, even most laymen can see the difference between Prime Tyson and what's running around as champs in the Heavyweight division today . It's sad so many on this site never take the time to observe and not just see the difference between the fight games past compared to its present.
