Anyone else glad Calzaghe is fighting Roy rather than Pavlik or Dawson?

We're mates, so I'll be frank. Your post brings out all the contradictions at the heart of this conundrum:

    1. You say Jones might be better that people assume and a real threat and you use that to argue that Calzaghe shouldn't fight him, because he might not beat him!:huh Surely, if Jones still has it, Calzaghe should definitely take the challenge, irrespective of ignorans fans' false expectations. If Jones performs well and wins, no one will be able to argue he was shot just because they thought he was shot before the fight!

    2. You say Calzaghe is fading and on the slide and yet you think he should fight someone in their prime in purely a physical contest. What would be the point of that? Then you say he'd get more credit for winning such a physical contest because he was faded? :huhFrom whom, exactly? People will just downplay Pavlik, as they did with Lacy and with Kessler. They'll say he was inexperienced and "Whom has he ever beat?"

    3. You talk about the way haters of Calzaghe will perceive a possible loss as a determining factor in the fight he should choose! :huh That makes no sense whatsoever! The only fans that matter are fans who look at the level of performace! Who cares what haters think, if you want Calzaghe to really prove himself and show how good he really is? It's not as if his haters will be objective in any way, anyway.

Meh. Dawson isn't world champion at the moment anyway. Should Calzaghe fight Diaconu because he's an undefeated world champion? Or Erdei?

Dawson would spank kessler do another adamek on him. if joe retires after he beats jones(which he will easily) ill never forgive him for making a mockery of the sport for years. imagine if joe retires undefeated a whole new era of **** slapping punchers who refuse to fight anyone of note.unless hes a massive favourite.

American acceptance = **** all to real boxing fans, right?. Real boxing fans are only interested in level of performace, surely! So, why should Calzaghe prove exclusively his physical atributes, particularly if he is faded, when his mental/tactical attributes he hasn't proven yet to the extent he and his fans would have hoped, failing in doing so against the best fighter he ever fought - Hopkins?

Dawson = chinnless wonder, hypejob dancer, ducking powder-puff

He will be exposed as soon as he fights a world class puncher, if not sooner. A slightly fresher Johnson would have starched him.

If Roy "exposes" Calzaghe the way Hopkins did, win or lose, Calzaghe's reputation as a great fighter will take a pounding.

If Pavlik or Dawson beat Calzaghe - well, he was faded and they were in their prime...who cares? Tyson was beaten by Danny Williams! Oh, dear, I guess Tyson must be **** then!...And Williams must be one of the very best!

give him credit absolutely no body without a chin beats adamek that handily or goes 12 rounds with johnson lets be honest you saying they cant punch?hate fact kessler getting put above other fighters by calzaghe to make himself look better id bet my house dawson would make him look foolish ala adamek. dawson and pavlik at their relatively young age have done as much as calzaghe(you imagine pavlik picked up the wbo strap and defended it against branko sobot 21 times? there would be outrage. hopefully after he beats washed up roy calzaghe will give pavlik a shot instead of bad mouthing him like a moron in the press! give pavlik all the grief you want joe, hes probly made more money than you already by fighting taylor twice and after he beats hopkins the whole world gonna want to see you two fight. what you gonna say then id easily beat pavlik but i refuse to prove it.

Sorry for the late reply Dec. But my stance on this would be that, if this really is JC's last fight, then i'd have to say i'm dissapointed. I'd much prefer he fought Pavlik and if not him then the winner of Dawson/Tarver. Either of those fights would mean far much more to JC's legacy than this version of Jones. They would be sterner tests for JC.

However, I firmly believe that this isn't Joe's last fight and that he is aiming for a final fight against Pavlik in Wales. I can't see Joe passing up the chance to have his farewell fight in the Milennium Stadium against Pavlik. Huge fight. If this is the case, then the Jones fight isn't as bad as a lot of people are making out. Yes Jones, is well past his best, but he's still a very good fighter who probably still has enough in the tank to beat some of the current top 10 heavies. I'd give him almost as much chance of beating Calzaghe as I would of Hopkins beating Pavlik. It's an intriguing fight for both men.

Im not the biggest Calzaghe fan but if he did beat Pavlik like Kessler and Lacy the win would be discredited

    Definitely not.

Just as Calzaghe's reign against prime well known fighters began, it ended. Whilst Joe - Roy is definitely a very interesting fight, Roy has done his time in the ring and it is time to retire, Joe is still relatively close to the top of his game, and could prove so much more than he has.

Calzaghe has nothing to gain in terms of legacy by fighting Jones. This is a money grab and Joe is entitled to it, so I have no issue with this fight from that perspective.

But there's no question that Pavlik and especially Dawson would trouble Joe big-time. Both of those guys throw a lot of punches, whereas Hopkins and Jones do not. Calzaghe, who gets full credit from me for his work since 2006, wouldn't be able to rely on his workrate alone against Pavlik or Dawson.

I think Calzaghe v Jones at Madison Square Garden will be an awsome event, great for boxing, a spectacle, and possibly even a very good fight. So I'm very glad it happening and fighting someone like Dawson would just be pointless at this stage in Joe's career. I also think he will almost certainly fight Pavlik in Wales for his last fight before retirement - RJJ isn't that fight.
