Anyone else not quite sold on Danny Jacobs?

I usually hate nitpicking on young fighters, but I've got to ask this.

There is so damned much to like about Jacobs that I'm trying to figure out why I've only got one foot on the bandwagon. He's got fast hands, good power, a great work ethic, he's a thinking fighter, and he stays composed, all things I appreciate. Plus he's only a prospect, so of course he can only get better.

    But there's just something missing.

Now it could be that I'm just being too hard on him. In fact, this is very likely, as I've been going back over old Hopkins fights from the early 90s lately. Comparing Jacobs to Hopkins is unfair. And in the wake of Pavlik and Taylor being tabbed as the heirs apparent at middleweight, I'm probably even more skeptical than I normally would be about the next "great" fighter at 160.

The only concrete example of what is "missing" that I can give is the way he let Walton hang around on FNF. This guy was giving off "get me out of here" body language after about four rounds. Jacobs let him slide another four rounds. A safe win is a good win in any sport, but when I don't see that overdrive gear out of a fighter when his opponent is in trouble, it sends up a caution flag.

Now it may well be that Jacobs can "take what he's given" all the way to a world title, and obviously guys like Walton aren't going to bring out his full attention, but as of now, I have my doubts about him. And while I'm typing this up after the Ortiz fight, the thoughts were crossing my mind on Friday, and really, for about as long as I've been watching him.

    Am I alone here?

I had the privilege....god what a great avatar.....anyways I've had the privilege of watching Jacobs since his NY Golden Gloves days. The Walton fight seems extremely uncharacteristic of him. It seemed completely strange to see him go for a more measured, calm and "more is more" style with his punches.

Before FNF he mentioned that he wasn't going to think of himself as a power puncher even though IMO he has great power. I guess he doesn't want to be a one dimensional head hunter and is looking for more accumulation and less one punch KOs.

I'm still as big a believe in Jacobs as I've always been...but this new style intrigues me and makes me wonder whether he's losing confidence in his punch.

The other thing (and the thing I'd REALLY wished someone had reported before the fight) is that Jacobs had pretty much manhandled Walton in sparring in the not so distant past. I think he knew damn well this guy had nothing for him and just got some rounds in.

I'm kind of groping around in the dark on this one. I mean, I was off the deep end over freaking Gamboa, and he couldn't even stay off the canvas for a while there.

I'm familiar enough with Jacobs to be comfortable in to put my faith behind him...but hey, I can see why someone would be confused or potentially wary on the guy.

It doesn't help matters that Mattvey Korobov is just BLASTING people out and they're in the same range. If we fast forward to 2011, I bet both guys are on a big money collision course.

I'm definitely interested to see how they move him, especially after Ortiz - Maidana.

How much longer do you think before they feed him someone like Kolle or Vanda?

Mike "The Midnight Stalker" Walker is probably better than those two guys IMO. That said both Vanda and Kolle are more natural 160 lbers so I can see why it'd be a step up.

Personally? It'll be interesting to see if GBP goes into over protective mode with Jacobs and baby him for another year. I think two or three fights and he should be ready to get somebody from the top 10 at the MW rankings.

And he took Walker on that quick turnaround. I loved that move, throwback sh*t.

I was going through the rankings and thinking about some matchups. Jacobs - Quillin would be a pretty decent FNF, but probably too little risk/ reward for both of them.

I'm not sold I didn't like him in his last fight. Maybe he is good but I need to see more. And the lesson to learn from the Ortiz fight is to wait and see how fighters reacts to adversity. Second is to look how they overcome a loss :)

Right I think Quillin will continue to get the same treatment Jacobs is getting.

If I had to plot his career (Danny Jacobs)

Manny Siaca in Early September of 09 (FNF)
Reasoning- 33 year old aging journeyman type fighter who can guarantee you some rounds. Been in there against Byron Mitchell, Mikkel Kessler and Silvo Branco

Billy Lyell in December of 09 on ShoBox
Reasoning- Lyell's stock has never ever been higher. Tough guy who's coming off a BIG BIG win over John Duddy. Lyell has pushed guys before and can really test a guy's heart and guts.

Elvin Ayala in April of 2010 on HBO
Reasoning- Ayala would be THE step up fight for Jacobs. He's gone 12 rounds with Abraham, got robbed against David Banks and has the style that could potentially derail the Jacobs train. That said the positives are there for something big. If he's able to KO Ayala before Abraham did (in the 12th), You've pretty much punched your ticket to the gravy train. This would be the real big test for Jacobs but I figure he'd pass it with ease.

Roman "Made In Hell" Karmazin in August of 2010 on HBO
Reasoning- Unless I'm mistaken Karmazin is the NABF Title holder. Roman is faded but still tough enough to give you a good fight. Not only that but it's an easy way to set up a future title shot and to look good against a still relevant opponent on the big network.

After that we go for a title shot.

That Walton guy was a tough sob. How about Green? He looked really bad in his last fight? What's his problem? Ring rust?

Joe Greene? Not a clue really. He's meddeningly inconsistent. Sometimes I think Joe Greene is going to put on a great show and he stinks it up. Then when you think he's done as a prospect, he comes back and tears through his opponent.

    Something seems off with him.

The only complaint I have is that his ears are a little too sticky-outy for my liking

    Arriba....good posting as usual, sir.

How can anybody NOT like Jacobs, esp. after he scored a 2nd round KO to make it possible to fight AGAIN 8 days later on a huge PPV card? Am I right to say the kid has fought 17 times now in 18 months?
