Not a knock on either guy here, it's just that I don't think that Mosley is anything close to being as good right now as people are making him out to be. The Margarito fight was just tailor made for him to look great in. Margo is just so slow, and his defense is so awful that Shane was able plant his feet and just launch haymakers that found their mark over and over again. We all know that Floyd isn't going to engage Shane, or stand in front of him like that, so Shane isn't going to look anything like that. What we are going to end up with is Mayweather always on the move, counterpunching... as this slower version of Shane is forced to pursue in an uncomfortable manner and be limited to throwing one punch at a time as we have seem him do time and time again over the past 5 years.

Now considering the fact that Mosley is now another year older, and inactive for that year as well... at 38 years old I am just not excited for this fight. Don't get me wrong, I am sure that I will watch it... just because I love boxing and anything can happen, but I don't expect any magnificent fight. Unless Mosley somehow turns back the clock about 10 years, I don't see him being quick enough, or staying busy enough to keep up with Floyd and Floyd will win a decision.

This certainly isn't a bash on Floyd, so don't take it that way. Other than Pac, obviously... I think that fighting Shane is the fight out there that people want to see the most. So, I definitely don't blame Floyd for going with this fight, because the fans are asking for it. I just think that boxing fans are fickle and put too much weight into each performance. They all still have Mosley vs Margo burnt into their brains and don't really seem to be able to look past that great style match-up and look at Mosley over the last 5 years or so (actually nearly 8 years now)... he hasn't been anything close to his best.

I think that the most exciting fight that could happen in the division would be Pac vs Mosley. Not backtracking on my Mosley comments here. Just the styles of the two coming against each other would definitely make for the most exciting fight for the fans. Also, Pac being a guy who is going to come in swinging will allow Shane to have his opportunities himself. A fight like that is better for Shane because it makes his age, and loss of speed and quickness much less obvious (and more than that his fluidity/reflexes). He won't have to go the prowl, and will be able to know that Pac is bringing the fight right to him and he will be able to open up his arsenal much more. That would be one hell of a fight to sit and watch.

Although of course... I would rather see Pac vs Mayweather than anything else. I do enjoy watching a great technician like Mayweather trying to tame someone like Pac... and that is the fight that NEEDS to happen. I think that Floyd's counterpunching could cause serious problems for Pac, but I think that Pac's style, and punching angles would cause some serious problems for Mayweather. I don't know if it would be as exciting for the common fan to sit and watch as Pac vs Mosley just brawling it out... but it would be great to me none-the-less.

  3. I agree but it's second biggest/best fight out there that can possibly be made.

gotta be excited any time two of the top 3 guys in a division fight...they both have a winning pedigree and have been in with some of the best of their time...i personally would rather see the pac-floyd matchup because of the contrast in style..contrary to what many say floyd is not boring, he is a boxer...just seeing how cerebral floyd is and how his shots are calculated, and how pac just wildly flails away not protecting himself, somethings gotta give...by that i mean floyd finds pacs attack unpredictable and decides he cant just lay back and counter and decided to get in there and brawl OR pac just swings wildly and gets picked off by mayweather and becomes less willing to throw...either way i had a feeling we would see sides of these two that we havent seen in awhile because they have been outclassing their competition.

I've been more excited about the idea of this happening than the pac fight from a viewing standpoint.

Considering that to me its better then

    Mayweather vs Judah
    Mayweather vs Baldo
    Mayweather vs Hoya
    Mayweather vs JMM
    Mayweather vs Sharmba
    Mayweather vs Hatton

which are most of mayweathers last fights

    and better then

    Mayweather vs Cintron
    Mayweather vs Hattons little brother
    Mayweather vs Malignaggi
    Mayweather vs Campbell

which were the other fights being considered.....

add to that Mosley is one of the most powerful, experienced, and fastest guys, added to his size that Mayweather has fought, and being one of the top welterweights of today, and the history between the two.... yes, i am very excited.

It would be quite hypocritical of me to be let down by this fight considering ive been wanting it to happen for awhile, both are still on top, and mosley is coming off (albiet, a year ago) one of the most impressive performences of his career.

The only other fights i would even care to see mayweather partake in at this point are against Pac, Williams and Bradley...

So im actually really excited about this fight....

as for mosley not looking good recently, i dont really go along with that...
its not like he was looking like **** and then came the margarito fight.

His last few fights have been Collazo, Cotto, Mayorga and Margarito.
Shane looked SUPERB in two of those fights, very good in the other one, and struggled with one. Against Collazo, who is not a one dimensional punching bag just walking in to get hit, he looked very polished, quick, and an elite fighter. Against a peaked cotto he still showed his class as a fighter..... he struggled heavily with a very motivated and in shape mayorga in a fight im sure he went into thinking it was going to be a showcase fight, and then completely dominated margarito in a way thats never been done before.

People like to talk about how Margarito was a perfect fit for shane, and indeed he was, but his last few opponents (cotto, mayorga, collazo, margarito) those are four very different fighters, and he looked good mint against two of the four, very solid against the other, and in all truth knocked out the guy he didnt look good against.

Is mosley at his best? no... of course not, the guy is 38. But so what? thats part of the sport.... hes still a top fighter, one of the best fighters mayweather has ever fought period, and one of the best matchups out there. All of that, to me at least, translates into excitement.

Is the fight late? yes it is.... but I cant knock Mayweather fighting Mosley after Mosley having one of the most impressive fights of his career (against a guy coming off the most impressive win of his career), regardless of the circumstances.

Does it replace him fighting Pac? not completely... no... but its the next best thing, and if he should get past mosley, which he should be the favorite to do, Mayweather - Pac only becomes bigger.

I do agree with you widdow that mosley tends to get overrated, but to me thats a different issue... and in no way takes away from my excitement of this fight. Like i said.... all things aside, mayweather is entering the ring with a guy with a combination of speed, power, experience, strength, size, and toughness that hes never been in with before outside of hoya (who he got a SD against, and to me that hoya is not as good as this mosley).... that to me at least gets me up for this fight.

I think your analysis is spot on. Don't get me wrong, I will watch this fight and will be excited about it, and I will have to give MW credit for taking this fight (even though deep down I don't think it will happen).

However Mosley has been waaay overrated after his win over Margarito. I certainly don't have him anywhere near P4P #3 like a lot of people do. If you watch Mosley fight these days, he almost fights completely flat footed, and does not have the lateral movement his once had. He was able to get away with this against Margarito and in the process make himself look amazing by landing his haymakers. No way in hell he will land any of those power shots against a defensive genius like MW.

Its a great matchup. Shane did win the WW Title by beating Margarito. Perhaps with Brother Nazim in his corner he can really make something happen

I agree that Shane is getting hyped because of the Margarito win. As someone made another thread about, his performances prior to that were Cotto and Mayorga. Against Cotto that was obviously a very close fight, and against Mayorga he was sloppy (although I had him comfortably ahead on points before his TKO).

I do believe Mosley can beat Floyd.

Shane has suffered in the past (IMO) from not really having a strategy in many of his fights. He has great tactical gifts, speed, good power, athleticism, stamina, but he doesnt effectively apply them

While Margarito may have been "tailor made" for him, I dont think ANYONE expected Shane to fight like that. He was utilizing a jab, employed great lateral movment, and was counterpuching and slipping Margarito's shots and really used his hand speed and ability to get off first to great effect

He didnt try to "power box/punch" as he had in the past, throwing lead right hands and hooks, and he kept the fight moving, something that Margarito was not at all used to.

His ring generalship was excellent, and frankly thats something that I had never seen him do before.

I credit it to Brother Nazim. I believe he made an enormous difference. So we'll see

agreed, infact he was doing alot of stuff hopkins does, he roughed margo up with his head, held and hit, threw combinations and immediately clinched to stop margo from getting started, he used his jab really well and went to the body like no other fight.

You are the only one pal although ill admitt its always hard to get exicted for a potential track meet that is always possible in a Mayweather fight.

I'm excited about it, but i really think this old version of mosley will get dominated by floyd....Anybody that has foot speed, and movement will give mosley problems at this point....

9-3, 8-4 type fight for mayweather...

I have never bought into this mythical KO machine mosley, after he destroyed margarito.....He clinched to negate any offense margo had because shane's legs are gone....

People will be suprised how easy this will be for floyd...
