On the one hand, I see your point. I think having such an omnipresent fear of being cut makes people more risk averse. On the other hand, you see this in lots of sport. I don't have the stats to back this up, but I strongly suspect that there are fewer KOs in boxing matches between top guys (title fights or eliminators or whatever) than in fights with guys who are middle of the road or lower. Also, watch college/olympic wrestling and see how many pins happen. Not very many. It's the nature of things that when the level of competition gets better, the more extreme outcomes are more rare.

  2. The fear of being dropped is the main thing, other promotions encourage fighters to take more risks and go for the kill. Just ask Rampage Jackson why his walk out song was the Pride theme, it was because he wanted to get that killer fighter back and not do the normal boring UFC Rampage.

ITs the evolution of the sport. People are learning from others mistakes(ex, getting KOd submitted)
It was bound to happen. MMA is a relatively new sport which mixes a few things so obviously at first you had guys that excelled in one thing but not the other so you got to see their flaws in another part of MMA and they paid for it by getting KOd or submitted.
Now that the sport is maturing more everyone is getting more practice on every aspect of the game and becoming more well rounded so KOs and submissions are not as likely to happen.

Same thing as boxing. Back in the day we had more KOs but the art of defense started to take over and less KOs happen because of it.
