How the **** does Larry keep his job? Do they pay that ****er in booze? I mean there isn't really a reason to have him anymore, they have Max who is trying to push the old man out the door. But more importantly they have Emmanuel Stewart, who does everything Larry does minus the drinking and 10 minute pauses. They would be better off kicking Larry off to BAD or something, keeping Emmanuel and pulling a boxer in whether that is Lennox, or getting Roy back, or perhaps even pulling Tarver from Showtime. Something has to get the whino out of there, I don't want to be treated like a dumbass the moment I order a PPV because Larry doesn't like Mayweather.
I've been to a couple of live fights. Both FNF ringside for Escalante-Locke and Escalante-Roman and I enjoyed it very much so, but I think a lot of it has to do with the excitment throughout the building that I love. Also, I went to the theater for the Mayweather-Moslry fight and it was very strange. I defo will not to that again. I had my dad with me and I was giving a bit of a background of each fight throughout the fight, and somebody told me to "quiet down." I told them this is a fight I'm going to talk if I want to, and not to mention I wasn't being obnoxious or anything like that. All I was doing was talking Boxing. I hate those "casual" Boxing fans. They don't know **** about Boxing. Anyway, BOT, I do perfer watching fights at home usually with a couple of other people where I can yell at the top of my lungs and jump up down and what not.
I respect your opinion Atlanta, but I will have to respectfully disagree with you on this. There's practically zero comparisons to be made between Emmanuel Steward and Larry Merchant. Steward is both boring and predictable. Larry, in contrast, will often come out with absolute classic quotes, and he also usually makes interesting and correct insights on the action itself. Larry isn't perfect, but he's the best there is, there was, or there ever will be. I don't want him to die...ever.
I've heard very different stories of people cheering and clapping a **** during the fight in a theater. So it probably is a place by place basis. If you have a bunch of old people or prim and proper types, walk back out and demand your money back as you try to sprint to Buffalo Wild wings or hooters to see the fight.
i picked i like to be at the events but only if i can get a decent seat. but i'm not loaded so i usually watch at home with a much better view, no drunks around me spewing non sense about mike tyson, and no one standing up in fromt of me or me blocking someone else's view( 6 and a half feet is a lot of man to look around) if money was no object at the fight is where i'd wanna be but since i'm not loaded with cash and do have bills i prefer watching at home. couldnt imagine shelling out for the theater experience.
ofcourse i would love to go to a live fight.. but man NOTHING beats having a few beers with like 3 other friends chilling at home and taking tokes outside of the balcony running back inside yelling "what happened???? nothing beats that....
Fights live are awesome, if you are me you yell instruction that they don't listen to, you root witlessly for your favorite fighter. If the crowd around you are cool you meet new friend that have the same interests as you. At the smaller events you meet a lot of new and up and coming talent.
Too much trouble to fly to Vegas, Germany, etc., then too many people, can't see the fight as well. Costs a lot more money also.
I grew up in El Paso, TX and fought on a few amateur cards with the guy. He may still train at the same gym, Pavo Real. Anyways, he had a helluva amateur fight during the 00 or 01 Golden Gloves finals against this tall rangy kid on my team. Escalante ended up getting the W and was on to state. Escalante didn't get much attention until after turning pro but Mickey Roman had been a amateur star for years. Amateurs weren't using headgear in Juarez back then and this kid was a beast from what I heard.
I didn't know that about Roman. And judging by his style I wouldn't have guessed it either! Escalante seems very, very likable to me in his interviews and I like the way he fights. The little glove shaking quirk makes me laugh.
