Anyone else think Roy looked worse than ever?

Biggest thing Jones seems to have lost is his Legs!... He used to move on air before and now he sits flat on his heels. Also his head movement and reflexes have diminished. He used to make guys miss a lot more where he didn't have to block and get hit has often. He still has hand speed but doesn't have the endurance to sustain his attack and combinations on the fighters as he once did. He had all the advantages against Trinidad, that is why he looked so good, but he still couldn't finish Tito; he made it down the field to only score a field goal instead of scoring a touch down. To put into comparison, look at the fight with Vinny Paz, a prime Jones who had the obvious physical advantage took care of business and finished his guy viciously like he did to Vinny.

Its not that anyone is taking credit away from Roy. Yes, at 39, an aged fighter, he looked good last night and will against most average fighters. The problem is that when he was in his prime, he seemed almost 'invincible' and dominated his fighters so convincingly, that now seeing him 1/3 of what he was, its hard to see him fight at or look like anything less than great. Despite what we would like to believe, that Roy is back to his old self, that simply isn't the case.

Roy looked pretty good to me, too.:good

 

To me Roy reminds me off a late 70's Ali (you pick the year) when Ali had slowed down, but could still do a little dancing, and little rope-a-dope & mugging, but still had the bursts of speed and punching to win fights.

I am looking forward to the Roy - JoeCal fight.

 

Its not that people are expecting roy to be 20 at age 39, at least not me. Its that many people prefer to see Roy retire rather than look like a good instead of great fighter. At least for me its difficuilt or frustrating to see him just look like a shell of what he once was. And I say this because I really do believe he would get outworked by a lesser guy like Calzaghe at this point in his career. So its pointless for him to go out calling out guys he can't beat.

It's like I told my friends, a win for Tito would mean a HELL of a lot more then a Jones win.

 

Jones is 39 and for a 39 yr old, he did great, not to mention Tito also did way more than i thought he would, considering it was he first fight above 160 and was completely blown out by Wright over 2 yrs ago! Overall i think the HBO crew summoned it up perfectly, both looked good, no one was embarassed, everyone got paid and both put on a show. Couldnt ask for more from former top-tier greats, whose better days are behind 'em.

 

Agree, Jones looked finished to me. If that was Glen Johnson he fought yesterday, I have little doubt that Jones would have gotten KOed again.

Worse than ever would not be my choice of words . Showing his age is more apt. He won and showed flashes against a slower smaller man but he wasn't overwhelming and showed he isn't as mobile as he once was. Tito was better than expected I must add.

Why keep fighting ? He was virtually untouchable for years , truly in a class of his own. Then he went up to heavyweight and won . He then should have retired. Where else is there to go after reaching the top of the mountain ? What could motivate him to continue after doing it all ? Nothing.... but what else does he know ?

So know we have a fading Roy who can only show brief flashes of what he once was.

He talks about "believing in himself" "faith in God" yada yada.... well and good but people get old Roy , wake up and smell the coffee. Retire NOW after a win.

 

I dont think Jones is done yet, he may not have the footwork and be able to slip punches as he once did, but he is still one damn good fighter. He's changed his style a bit, it's not as flashy as it used to be but so what, he's proven that its effective. Effective enough to knock down opponents and win rounds easily. I think he will win another world title, but it wont be a flashy spectacular performance like the roy jones of old, it'll be enough to win. Im kinda diggin this new roy jones. Thing you gotta realise is before he got knocked out by tarver, there was the truly elite fighters, and then there was jones who was on a whole other level of natural talent, i wouldn't count him out yet.
