I have watched/attended boxing matches for more years than I care to remember. I kow this has probably been discussed to death, but its something that struck me over the last year or so.
Horrible, horrible mismatches, I mean mismatches, particularly on the undercards that are truly pathetic.
Lightweight fight, in the red corner 6'2'' 250 am fights, gold medal. world , silver olympics, mean fit and fast, in the blue corner 5'4'' mexican (with the standard 15lb of fat round his middle, impressive at the lightweight limit), lost his last 5 fights by knockout, and has one outstanding statistic on his record, everytime this guy fights an oponent who has 1 or more wins, that opponent knocks him out.
So I am watching them touch gloves, poor little mexican hops a bit, jiggling in place, Mr gold medal strolls over and in 5 secs slaps the little guy off his feet. OFC he does not get up ( I would not if I were him either).
I mean seriously, I know this was the gold medal guys first fight, but if this is how ya want to get wins , visit any kindergarden, and knock 30 little 4 yoa of thier feet and claim the 30-0 record, it really is that silly.
After 35 yeard of watching boxing faithfully, through 2 wives, 4 children (grown), I am starting to not care to watch, which for me is sad....

Building a good record with little risk has been the SOP for years.

Having a good fighter with an average record does neither the fight or the promoter a service. Can't get recognized unless you have that 0 or close to it. So they throw 10-15 tomato cans at a decent fighter, and then when they get to move up they get clobbered. Also the tomato cans fight for next to nothing so management keeps the costs down while still "showing" 5 or more fights.

Yes, it sucks but often some of those fights are very entertaining.

The wheat gets separated from the chaff when these guys start facing real challenges. If they've been matched too soft for too long, are not as good as they appear, or both then it gets real ugly when they step in against a credible opponent.

I mean he went from medaling at the Olympics the apex of amatuer competition to the low ranks of the pros. He is fighting guys with no background their 5 pro fights are their only fights. Their main earning is waiting tables or construction fast food or taxi driving maybe a garbage man. Deontay shoud be fighting other prospects like Solis or old guys like McCall or something like that.

I remember when Jones fought a janitor, garbage man, postal worker, etc. on HBO and was getting $5,000,000 per fight!

Yes, Michalczewski and a rematch with Toney and Hopkins would have been fantastic also!
