Nothing great so far, at least in terms of pro prospects. We're in the MW division, and although I like Estrada as a kid and am pulling for him, I don't think he has great markings as a pro. Surely someone else is watching, right?
Do you get CNBC? That's where all the boxing is hidden. God damn, you know NBC doesn't care about boxing if ****ing fencing takes precedence over it.
That, along with Michael Phelps, is one of the main story lines for the United States in this Olympics (at least, for the media). I'm sure it will be on NBC.
Lampley, you're right about tonight not being terribly exciting. I, too, am rooting for Estrada because he is an American and because of his story; however, even if he gets past the Brit in the next round, he's set to run into the favored Russian. Making the quarterfinals for him would be a decent result. I'm more excited about tomorrow when Demetrius Andrade debuts.
I actually sort of like this French cat, Ramon. He's losing right now but has good hand speed, especially that rapier right hand. He's jittery and spastic, but I think he could make something of a pro career. This scoring system is the pits. They never score body punches, and you pretty much have to break a guy's neck with a jab in order for that to be counted.
Me too. Watching the clips of Andrade, he appears to have real professional potential. I'd be very surprised if Estrada medals.
Ramon is going home. He needs to be happy he made the team and, if he continues on, locate a seasoned trainer who can smooth out the many rough edges. He does have some talent, though.
Now in the LHW division. Brazil vs. Haiti to start. So far, the Brazilian is throwing more hooks, which is the best way to win fights here, apparently.
Yeah, the scoring really is interesting to attempt to figure out. A lot of clean punches land that don't get scored, but then a choppy counter will graze the opponent's head and the ticker will go up. It's strange. The Haitian is very well built, but the Brazilian does seem to have a bit of an edge.
By the way, I just checked the draw and the fight after next should feature Julius Jackson, the son of the terrific power puncher.
