He was a middleweight contender in the 40s. My grandfather and great uncle were friends of his. He trained my great uncles son in the am's. I never got to meet him, but I visited my grandfather yesterday and he talked a lot about Pete. He handed Joey DeJohn his first two losses, but got KOd by him in their third match. The only other man to beat DeJohn by 1949 was Lamotta. Mead retired and moved back to Arkansas and started farming when he got a letter saying Rocky (Graziano, they became friends during Pete's stint of fights at the Garden) wanted to give him a fight and one last payday. He got KO'd in three rounds, and afterward said "I was in farming shape, but not boxing shape). Just wondering if anyone else knew anything about this man that they could share. My grandfather said he was tough as nails, and a brawler. Here's his boxrec link..http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=011213&cat=boxer
He beat my father, Charley Zivic by decision at St. Nick's in 1948. I would love to get my hands on that film.
You know that never was mentioned. I only see my grandfather maybe twice, at most three times a year, and my great uncle even less. Like I said, I never met the man myself, just have heard some stories and heard he was a great guy. I know now though. Thanks for the info.
My granddad mentioned the last time he was at Pete's house before he died, they watched a whole bunch of fight film. I asked him which fights they watched and he said he couldn't remember. I'm sure it's a long shot, but maybe my uncle (he was closer than my granddad) still has a connection to the family, and maybe that's one of the fights he's got film of. If all that falls just right, I'll see what I can do for you. That's a lot of maybes, but I will check into it for you.
Yes Pete Mead was tough as nails. I saw my neighbor Harold Green beat Pete Mead in MSG in 1947 on my birthday. Green and Mead put on a great show that night.A couple of months before Mead beat the veteran Fritzie Zivic. Mead was in many wars, because of his brawling methods. A real crowd pleaser Pete was...
It's amazing to know the style of fighter he was, the number of fights he had and the wars he was in, died at a ripe old age of 83, and my grandfather says he wasn't the least bit punchy. I guess some guys are just luckier than others, or have thicker skulls or something.
