Anyone ever see "Foreman-Qawi" of '88 on PPV?

    Folks,

Back in 1988, comebacking George Foreman selected Dwight M. Qawi as one of his early comeback opponents. Foreman weighed a trim 235 pounds, while Qawi was a hefty 222 pounds.

Both guys looked off to me in the skills dept. Foreman seemed awkward early on and the smaller Qawi was often knocked off balance from glancing blows by Foreman.

This card stunk to be totally honest, but since I am a fan of both Foreman and Qawi, I bought into it back in '88.

If anything, I wish Foreman could've maintained that 235 pounds by 1991 in which he challenged Holyfield in New Jersey. Foreman looked strong and wee more spry on his legs down in the middle 230s.

I dig and admire Dwight M. Qawi, but he was mismatched here against Foreman.

    Foreman TKO 7 Qawi.:deal:bbb

    Referee: Carlos Padilla

I bought it too. I was a sucker for ppv back then. But it was cheaper by far. I reached my lowpoint when I bought Scott Frank vs. Ken Arlt. for 9 or 10.50. But sometimes the odd ones paid off. The Hearns-Barkley fight was a payperview that was off the radar in 88 and a sure thing for Tommy turned into a history changing upset for many fighters. When Dwight was Braxton in the 1980-Oct. 82, he was awesome great against those ESPN guys, Rossman, Scott, Saad, Martin and finally perfect and like a Tiger against Saad again. After that and the Qawi name change, he never was the firebreathing stomp out and get down and kick ass guy again. The menace was just GONE. it was weird and discouraging. Saited hunger is sooo bad for a fighter and has changed many career courses. No Braxton/qawi would ever beat Bigg George though.

In Britain we got on Sportsworld Extra. We did not have to pay a penny, but we did not get it live.

I agree. Some of them PPV's that are NOT behind HBO or Showtime do sometimes pay-off...

Hell, I remember in circa 1988 doing Duran vs. Ricky Stackhouse...

PPV today in '12 is outta control...

Foreman said he felt weakened by coming in so light.

For this fight coming up on Saturday, instead of buying on payperview, the movie theater has it on their screens for $15.00. It should be nice on giant screen. Of course no beer allowed, but at 77, I need to cut back. lol
I saw a lot of heavyweight title fights on closed circuit and also Leonard-Duran and others up to the early 80s. Hopefully the picture and quality has improved. I'd rather pay 15 because I feel Cotto has no hope but really hope to see Saul battter and stop Mosely, who has given less than a stellar effort twice in his last superfights and I feel, ripped me off. I'm very vengeful lol It was a lot easier in the old days just going down to the Olympic or Forum and seeing super fights everytime w/ the action fighters who fought there from the 40s into the late 80s , really mid 80s when it kind of died out.

Hell, when I go to the movie theatre I usually sneak in a pint of whiskey in my jacket and buy a regular popcorn and a regular Coke and watch the flick while catching a hummer... Yeah, beers are tough, but a pint of whiskey is a piece of cake...

Thanks! I just might get Captain Morgan and his crew to sail me to the fight.

I can't understand why George DID N'T maintain that weight.

Can't think why. He looked pretty fit and strong.

I've pulled-it-off many times over.... I hate watching a movie or fight stone cold sober...

Foreman didn't have the discipline to fend off food and drink... He liked being big... That 257 he became accustomed to allowed him to still eat pretty good... Hell, by 1994, Foreman had to train his ass off to make 250 for Moorer...

I watched Foreman verses Cannuck Ken Lakusta on Eurosport the other night. The Canadian guy was knocked down in the third and looking spent when he landed a haymaker that wobbled George momemtarily before being dropped again and failing to beat the count. Must be the only time George was wobbled in his comeback.

No. Earlier in 1988 an ex-Spinks sparring partner named Carlos Hernandez rocked Foreman with a haymaker during the opening stanza... Foreman rebounded and went on to TKO Hernandez in round 5...
