Anyone feel bad for Sergio Martinez?

Sergio was good enough to make the serious big money in his career like Cotto has. He did fine, but not like he probably deserved. That's why I felt bad for him in the end.

 

I don't feel bad for him. Would have preferred for a middleweight to expose him though. I thought Murray pretty much did it last time out, but he got jobbed on the cards. Think about who Martinez has fought. I give him Pavlik, but the pre Hopkins Pavlik would have knocked Martinez out. Dzinziruk, and Williams weren't middleweights. DiBella, had to lobby the WBC to get Barker, who had no significant wins, ranked in the top 15, probably by payoff. So Martinez could fight him, instead of Pirog, and Golovkin. He then fought Chavez Jr. who was ranked mainly due to his name, and fought Macklin, who I considered a solid opponent due to his showing against Sturm. Then Murray spanks him and gets robbed. And now Martinez tried to pick on a 154 pounder, instead of fighting Golovkin, and he seems to have gotten spanked by the 154 pounder. That is laughable. Karma is a *****.

 

Martinez is somewhere happy knowing he got paid & Golovkin isn't breathing down his back now.

 

Absolutely not. Martinez got what he had coming to him. He should have fought Golovkin and passed the torch like a man. Instead, he wiped his ass with the lineal middleweight title by handing it over to Cotto.

Not a little bit.

The smartass fooled everyone with his lies about his condition and all that, while he had a farce of a training camp and he didn't even spar a single round.

He got his cashout. His payday. With those moneys he can buy a lot of things, but not his pride back or my respect or compassion.

And at the end of the day, he DID indeed duck GGG. And i was one of those defending him.
Gtfo, Martinez, you sold your soul if you ever had one.

 

This is a good thread. Maravilla was a warrior, and one of the best of his era. It's a pity to see him go out like that (and I don't know if we'll ever see him fight again), and as happy as I am for Cotto I definitely felt for the guy. He was in a bad situation, and some of you are right to say he shouldn't have taken the fight but then again maybe he genuinely believed he could find a way to win (all it takes it a good punch).

 

in a way, yes. to go out like that was pretty shocking. he's been out for a long time with injuries and such, but Cotto was the smaller man and past his best himself. so i din't expect that. every punch that landed shook Martinez up bad, so his punch resistance isn't there any more.

but give credit to Cotto, he put on a great performance and seemed to have turned the clock back. maybe there are some big nights left for Cotto in the future. or maybe he just looked like that because Martinez wasn't in any way shape or form ready to give his best.

we'll find out soon enough.

but what is certain, is that Cotto won't go anywhere near Golovkin.

 

This won't hurt his legacy, he was shot in this match.

Great achievement to win the middleweight title by Cotto but Maravilla was ****ed going into the fight.

 

Don't worry Cotto's time is marked. It wasn't that long ago when the guy who likes to call himself "Miguel Cotto" was throwing a diva fit refusing to do an interview because he lost to Trout and Mayweather. Once he faces healthy B+/A level opposition he'll cry again.

I do feel bad for Sergio but he did bring some of it on himself. He was talking a lot, apparently to detract from his knee problems.

 

sergio is a scumbag for selling his fans out like he did. sergio was clearly injured going into the fight and simply showed up for the paycheck.

 

Nope it was a cash out **** him.

 

How do you know he didn't spar in training? I was wondering about this after it looked like his knee went out in the second KD of the fight. And the 24/7 didn't show any sparring but then again, they dont always show that.

 

When you look at Cotto's successes remember this

Tony Margarito was basically blind in one eye when he fought Cotto II
Sergio Martinez was basically one legged against Cotto he was a shot fighter. Neither man was 100% fit to fight. If they were 100% fit Cotto would have never fought either No one can deny that.

 

I don't feel sorry for him...he put himself up to it and he got punished for it. I respect that he's man enough to accept the defeat gracefully, but it left a bitter taste in my mouth.

No only were his legs not 100%, he probably didn't spar much for the fight either in fear of injuring his legs. You can tell he didn't feel comfortable or confident in the ring. He probably just got in sharp just enough to make weight.

I like Cotto a lot and I will always root for him, but Martinez was 50% of his former self in the fight. Both of his legs were gone.
