I have not trained in a week and a half (weights and running) and noticed ive been losing muscle and 5 pounds. I go in the yard to mess around on the heavy bag and my speed and power were pretty freaky. I'm a puncher but my power and speed increased noticeably. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Maybe all the old school trainers are right about no weights :think

Maybe it's because your muscles are well rested?

You haven't lost any muscle mass after a week and a half unless there's something seriously wrong with you.

    I usually do

    8x3 pull ups
    23x3 Shoulder press
    20x3 pushups
    6x3 chin ups
    neck yes and nos
    65x3 crunches
    50x3 russian twists
    80x3 bicycle crunches
    Plank and Six inches

not diverse, no access to actual weights except a single dumbell...should have wrote strength training instead

That's neither a strength routine or a weight routine. It's just a bunch of random exercises and reps/sets.

I'd rather focus on conditioning and boxing than weights...imo they are a waste of energy

Actually in looking at your workout, maybe it's just too much with everything else you do. Scale it back and see how you perform.

What happened just shows that whatever conditioning routine you were doing may have actually been detrimental to your boxing performance.

Maybe you need to work on your grasp of logic on top of everything else, since what you described is contrary to your initial assertions.

oh, btw, did you roll a 20-sided dice to come up with those rep and set schemes?

Just no rhyme or reason to them at all.

Why not just intensify your heavy bag drills instead of doing that nonsensical routine of yours?

I don't think weights are a waste of energy per se, but agree a boxer's time would be far better spent putting energy into boxing first then conditioning before weights. At the boxing gym I go to, the amateurs box 5 days a week plus aerobic conditioning separately. Weights would be tough to implement given that schedule and lead undoubtedly to over-training, even with teenagers.

Low to mid level intensity plyometrics could be incorporated into conditioning work sparingly and be advantageous to a boxer.

On a side thought, I've never competed in a combat sport, be it boxing or grappling tourneys where I have said I wish I weight trained more, but definitely have been tapped out by superior technique and lost in later matches in tourneys due to lack of gas tank.
