Well he wasnt the same type of guy. He needed that reinforcement in his corner for mental fortitude, and when that went away Tyson was reduced to some extent, but he did pretty well for a fractured guy so its testament to how physically talented he was.

People always talk about Tyson being mentally weak but it toke plenty of mental strength to keep his focus and win the title after his mentor Cus died.

Mike started slipping the day Cus died and that "wretched swine of a woman," Robin Givens took over life. This was well before swine #2, Desiree Washington was in the picture.

Tyson had great cover with Custus, Jimmy, Kevin and Bill working for him in the mid to late 80s.......... Once them dude's died off and or were fired, Tyson's true colors began to surface........ Don King, Rory Halloway and John Horne were no guidance whatsoever..........

    NOTE:

Believe it or not, but had Tyson completely walked away from boxing after kayoing Frank Bruno in the 1996 rematch for the WBC title, Tyson's legacy and all-time ranking amongst heavies from 1887 to 2010 would be standing MUCH taller today than it actually is........... Tyson would prolly secure a top-5 slot / spot with ease amongst most voters.......... But the horse**** that followed after the TKO loss to Holy and above just ruins it for Tyson.........

But, aside from blowing it after Bruno and Seldon in 1996, Tyson banked a shitload of cash in the process that now has flown way south prolly never to fully resurface ever again........ After 1996, Tyson fought for the money and was on borrowed time with tarnished skills...........

I believe Ruddock was considered for a November 89 date in Canada, but I think Ribalta was very much pencilled in for the Tokyo date, as it was figured he would at least go a few rounds, after the Japs had, had to put up with two previous gross mismatches for World Heavyweight Title fights...

tyson was my favorite, hindsight says he was slipping before douglas, but come on! he was the man and losing? no way.

Holyfield wasn't a threat to the tyson I remember, but after he learned to lose then anything went.

anyone putting tyson's name on evanders or lennox's best wins are giving them WAY too much credit.

Excuse my language, but Horne & Holloway were absolute good-for-nothing c**ts, who knew ****-all about boxing, business management or anything else for that matter. King brought Horne & Holloway in to distract Tyson, to have Mike fall into the thinking of "these are my boys, they got my back" etc. It was all planned by King!

For example, Tyson received $30,000,000 as his purse for the first Holyfield bout. Of which, Horne & Holloway received $3M EACH, King took $9M for himself. That means straight away, before tax deductions, training expenses, etc, Tyson's purse was cut in half, 50%!

Horne, Holloway were leaches who did everything King said. Just go read "The Inner Ring", by Rudy Gonzales, who was Tyson's Chauffeur, personal aide, etc, for over five years. Rudy was privy to all that went on!

Tyson didn't some stupid things in his time & no doubt he's aware of it, but King & his cronies ruined him! In Beyond the Glory, Tyson's lawyer at the time talks about Tyson suing King & the pending lawsuit/case. He states that in just one transaction, which they could prove, King made instruction for $43,000,000 to go from Tyson's bank account into Don King's bank account!

One word comes to mind: SNAKE

It could be argued Tyson started slipping the day he met Cus. It seems to me Tyson needed a Father, not a boxing trainer...

"Foreman-Roman" sucked long dick to the base of the balls in 1973.:deal

"Tyson-Blubbs" had potential, but Blubbs went down in round two from a short left hook to the temple......... That too sucked ****.........
    :patsch

    "Tyson-Douglas" is a friggin' epic...........:thumbsup

    MR.BILL

    Note:

"Foreman-Grimsley" of '96 went 12 rds, but the fight was gay and boring......

Team Ruddock was ready, more ready than team Tyson from what I remember. Ruddock vs Tyson was supposed to happen in Edmonton, sept/oct 89, but Tyson pulled out because of chest pain and bronchitis. Ruddock didn't back away from this fight. We all know what happened a few months later in Tokyo.

is that book 'the inner ring' any good. Wouldnt mind giving it a read.
King took 43million from tysons account? surely if this could be proven then he would be able to claim it back

It has some interesting bits about how Tysons personal life went on. King robbed him blind, theres receipts in that book to prove it. 30K for an oil change, Tyson paid Kings entire families cell phone bills. It was robbery. Tyson had a very strong case against King, but he settled for pennies on the dollar, because he was completely broke. Turns out Shelly Finkel didnt do him any favors either, he was as bad as King.

fuk,hes a snake in the grass that King. How he gets away with it time and time again is a mystery. i seen a documentary of him and jack neufield was doing most of the talking. There was an interview with a guy called,i think, jeremiah shabaaz, who said that King gave him 50,000 dollars to bring round to Ali,to grease out the problems they had over Alis non-payment for the holmes fight. He was given strict instructions not to hand it over until Ali signed a piece of paper waiving any rights he had to that purse
