What got the Tyson ball rolling so huge was that he became a "sure thing". People love a sure thing in sports--a stage where you typically see equal levels of competition. So when someone comes along that is head and shoulders above the rest, it is magnetic.

Tyson was knocking out the highest levels of competition in a matter of seconds. There was seemingly no competition there. He reduced the top talent into bottom feeders. Rarely does that happen, if ever. Usually at the highest levels, fights go on for a significant period of time, or even to decision, because the talent on both sides is relatively equal. But Tyson, even in his biggest fights (in the 80's), kept up the same level of devastation as if he was still fighting journeymen. Commentator's were saying things like "Who on earth can beat this man?"

I think the Bruno and Williams fights lulled Tyson in complacency. He sleepwalked through those fights, and still blew them out. He definitely started to believe his own hype, as he wasn't training the same, but still achieved the same results.

this is truth. the 80's had some good talent, but tyson turned them into playthings.
