Anyone here believe that Liston could have beaten 70's Foreman?

Sonny's jab, lower center of gravity and straight punching would be huge here. He'd be going to the body, and likely induce George to use his legs moving around by standing his ground better. Foreman preferred to go at mid range. Liston would more probably keep him at full distance, where George would have less opportunity to try utilizing his physical strength to shove off. When he did attempt to do this, there's no assurance he'd have been successful. However, there is footage of Sonny boxing effectively in retreat when he stopped Scrap Iron, and it can't be ruled out that he couldn't box like that with Foreman as well.

Beating Sonny on points requires better speed and technique than George had. If there's no stoppage, I don't see how Foreman takes it. Without a knockout, Leotis probably would have lost to an aged Liston, and we're discussing peak for peak with Sonny here.

Of course he COULD have, I think this is a 50/50 fight, one of my favourite fantasy fights of all time alongside Frazier-Marciano, Morales-Hamed, Duran-Chavez & Pep-Armstrong amongst many others.

George would have eaten that jab all night, Sonny wins this one.

 

Just a fun-filled fact.

In 1969, when Sonny and George were working out together.
One of their training assignments, was to push a wheel-barrow filled
with 150 lbs. of dry-cement up a sloped hill.

Sonny could do it 3x in a row without rest, at age 41.

Big George, could only do it once.

 

Liston by KO. Faster. Punched straighter. Better skills. Better chin. Better stamina. Better defense. Prime Sonny fought bigger punchers than 70s Foreman did, took their bombs and knocked them stiff(Cleveland Williams and Mike DeJohn come to mind).

Foreman was tested by one big puncher- Lyle- and was bounced all over the place. Sonny took the bombs of a BIGGER puncher- Williams- and stayed on his feet. So it must be said that Liston had the more battle-tested chin.

 

Not even close, George would kill Liston in 6 or less. George was too big, strong and fearless.

 

I do. I think Liston was the more dangerous and complete fighter h2h. Foreman still managed to accomplish more and I rank him higher though.

For starters, Old Liston had lost most of his power, & do you really believe Liston was punching young Foreman full force in sparring? :huh

Lyle was punching to kill Foreman, with more power than he'd shown in any other fight.

 

the best ever liston beats the best ever formena in my opinion...a better boxer, big power, more controlled, more disciplined.....i think we tend to remember the liston of the ali fights, when he was all ready over the hill....the size disparity isnt huge, power is compareable and i just think sonny has too much savvy to lose to any version of fporeman
