You do realize Dempsey died only fairly recently? Less than 38 years ago. Their are people twice that age who are still on this forum. Burt, Garfield, among others here have all met him. Maybe Old Fogey as well.

Burt is still alive. Garfield sadly passed away. May he R.I.P.

Yes, I do, but that kind of logic only goes so far. Sure, I believe people on here have met him, but I mean, how many people would believe me if I said I had met Sylvester Stallone? He's just as famous in his own time.

Well I was alive and living in NYC when he had he restaurant, and I remember walking around in the area (used to be near the Empire State Building) and seeing it but never went in and never met the man. It closed in 1974.

There is a Jack Dempsey's Restaurant in New Orleans still open; the owning family was not related to the great boxer.

Garfield when he felt like responding to me was a trove of information and stories.

    RIP old timer.

Garfield died before you came here... or did you have another account? And yes, the man was a walking encyclopedia.

You meet Jack Dempsey, if you ever get up when you can't.

I met him at the finish line of the Ultra trail du Mount Blanc once!

Met him with my father at his restaurant in NYC in 1974....not long before his place closed. Just got out of high school. He'd sometimes sit by the window and wave at the people. We went to where he was holding court. He spoke to me first..put out his huge hand...and I shook it. ! was thrilled to meet the great man. He was very polite...singing autographs and posing for a quick picture. I was in awe!

He’s been here much longer than you. But that’s all I’m gong to say.

His profile says he joined about two months ago. I've been on here for a year.

Countless people met Jack Dempsey as you did, at his restaurant (I am not among them, it closed when I was about 10 and I didn’t make it to NYC until a few years ago).

Jack understood the basics of his business — I’m sure the food and drinks were fine, but you went to Jack Dempsey’s to meet Jack Dempsey. So he mixed joyfully, from all accounts, with his public and signed any napkin or matchbook or whatever anyone wanted him to autograph as long as they were customers.

I’ve read his autograph is one of the easiest to collect because he signed so many in his eatery.

I do envy you this, and it’s awesome that you got to meet him!
