Anyone here ever meet Jack Dempsey ?

That's so sad! Where did he say this? I seem to have missed it. I hope he's doing well wherever he is!

 

It was his very last post on this forum announcing his “retirement”.
It was a while ago,you would have to follow his threads and posts to find it.
And that was before covid I think.

 

Must have been an honour to meet the late great Manassa Mauler.

 

I've been on this forum a long time intermittently - this is the first confirmation I've had that Garfield passed away.

He was a real one - feels like a big part of gym and behind the scenes history has been lost.

 

Mr Rein passed away sadly quite a number of years ago.Late 2013 as it happened.

I’m enjoying that Djanders has returned though. He posted regularly here, went missing for a number of years before mounting a comeback at a sprightly 96 years of age. I seriously thought he’d passed away years ago.

We should embrace having a gent (and he’s definitely that) in our midst contributing to this forum. I mean he shook Jack Dempsey’s hand!!

That's a shame. John was a font of knowledge and insights.

I really should to be honest, then I wouldn't be surprised by news.

I lost my father last year and with the kids and life and all the other stuff that happens in the UK - I've always been a mood poster.

I promise to post more until I don't and then I will lurk like Batman in the shadows waiting to return and rescue the city.

 

He is 96?

Am I the only person Joe Rein was an absolute JERK to? (LOL)

I enjoyed the guy's posts, too. Never really engaged with him on any forum or on any board. But we were both on a site that was co-owned by Jake Donovan about 15 or 16 years ago. Jake was getting people on the site press passes to fights with the understanding they'd write articles about the fights they were attending. The problem was a number of posters would get press passes, go to fights, sit ringside, drink beer all night and then write nothing. And Jake or the other owner (I believe his name was Carlos) mentioned on the boards he was getting tired of it.

Joe Rein was attending a bunch of fights out in California in 2004 or 2005. I remember on one occasion he spent a week on the message board talking about all the events he was attending before a Manny Pacquiao fight. But he wrote one article about a media day event. That was it. Nothing about the dozen fights on the card. No recaps. Nothing.

A bunch of us were talking on the message boards, and I said people should be writing more if they are attending these shows for free. Seems like people attending could write a profile on each of the main event fighters. Write an article about an important undercard fight. Write a recap of the fight card itself. You should be able to get at least five articles out of a show. And Joe saw us talking on the forums and told us all to put our money where my mouths were. So I talked to Jake and the other owner, attended some cards near my home and wrote five or six articles for the event. They liked them and asked me to do more. In 2005, there were two large cards on back-to-back weekends. I was freelancing at the time, so I attended everything there was to attend and wrote at least a dozen feature articles. It was exhausting but I had a great time. I received a lot of compliments about the articles. I ended writing close to 100 articles for the site over a few years and met a lot of the top fighters of the day. I was uploading videos. Providing content. Spent a lot of time on the boards. It was a lot of fun.

Then, at one point, the site had financial problems and Joe agreed to help fund the site and become a partner. But he told Jake Donovan he'd only do it if they banned me. I don't mean ban me from the message boards. Joe didn't want me to write for them anymore. I couldn't upload videos. And I was banned from posting on the forums. Total ban. He'd save the site financially if they GOT RID OF ME. (LOL) And I wasn't a co-owner or anything. I was just a member.

Jake wrote to me and was very nice and apologized profusely. (He was and still is a very nice guy.) But he explained the situation and he'd recently gotten his promoter's license and was trying to use the site and the fight cards he was promoting in an attempt to turn it into something bigger. I think, within a year, it all folded anyway.

Apparently, Joe was really angry that I called him out (not even by name, just members in general who were attending shows and not writing). The other owner attended a show in Chicago with me before this all happened and said "Boy, Joe really hates you." I said, "Really?"

I can't say Joe was my enemy or anything because, like I said, we never had a cross word. We never spoke. But, behind my back, he was a complete dick and used money to actually get me banned from a site. I still can't believe it happened. It was really weird.

So, that's my Joe Rein story. Not the greatest guy.

Anyway.

 

Sorry to hear about your father, genuinely. I lost my mom a few years ago and know that haunting feeling.
