I remember we talked about this awhile back and just wondering if any of you have had second thoughts. I'm kinda leaning towards Gomez at the moment.

I don't think he will win but I think this will be a closer fight than anticipated.

When the fight was first made I thought it was a joke, but Gomez is going to give Cotto all he can handle.

    main reasons

gomez is heavier on fight night than cotto who comes in at around 160 pounds. gomez came in at around 160 against gatti first time cotto has fought a guy this big before.

gomez has fought bigger guys and manhandled them manfredo, brinkley, big guys who fight at light heavy or supermiddle. so he might handle the pressure better.

he is a big puncher and has a nice straight right hand which i think will go down the pipe. also likes to go to the body and is a warrior or at least feels he is a warrior (he knows more than me to be honest).

a jab which is think is good enough to keep the distance to land the rigth hand.

and news of cotto's father and his corner might make him slip.

i dunno i think it's very good odds for a pretty even fight.

Because Gomez is a solid all around guy who might not be taken seriously. Granted he has had some issues before but I truly think Gomez is one of these guys who fights at the level of his opponent.

He's had ample time to prepare here and he is fighting a star opponent. Remember Gomez has fought at 154. He's not a small guy next to Cotto. He's also technically sound, while not flashy or fast. Cotto seems to do well against guys who are flashy or one and done. Because of his methodical nature he can wear those guys out over rounds. But Gomez is just as methodical and just as hard-headed.

Despite only having 8kos on his record something tells me Gomez hits harder than advertised. Maybe he wouldn't ko a boxer/mover, but someone like Cotto who will square up may be open for a clean right hand. Like the kind that decked a faded Gatti.

I think Gomez is coming to win. Cotto may beat him, but I would not be surprised if Cotto got up off the canvas to do so.

Feliciano pressed Gomez tha last time they fought and they drew. I think Cotto will do much better than Feliciano. :good

Cotto is going to win, the possibility is here because Gomez is much better then his record suggests. But I do believe Cotto is also aware of that and is taking Gomez as seriously as any other opponent.

Seems like a lot of you are putting too much stock into Gomez's performance against a shot Arturo Gatti. Gomez landed at least 30 flush punches on Gatti prior to the knockdown. He's not a big puncher, and has an average skillset at best. Gomez is a durable C-class opponent serving as a tuneup for a unification match. Nothing more, nothing less.

He's not nearly as skilled as Cotto. Hopefully the trainer change, rumored camp turmoil, and Knee injury won't make this more difficult than need be for young Miguel.

I think Cotto will win convincingly but it should be a very good fight.

i agree that he isnt truely world class but he does bring a bit of mexican blood to the welter rankings.

yes people are using the gatti fight as a marker point.

but we knew before that he could punch and be aggresive.

i used the gatti fight in my post due to everone seeing that straight right hand.
