New York Herald - 1922-01-29 (section 4, page 5) Benny LEONARD. GEORGE (KID) LAVIGNE, one of the greatest lightweight champions of all times, has presented to Benny Leonard a gold headed training stick or road cane made of discs of leather. Edward Griguerre, a French admirer of Lavigne, gave the cane to him in 1894, when Lavigne succeeded to the title. Griguerre intended it should be a championship trophy and asked Lavigne to hand it to his successor. However, the cane has remained in the Saginaw Kid's hands until the present time. In a latter to Leonard Lavigne expressed the belief that Benny is the greatest of all lightweight, "I have seen you box," he wrote, "and I am sure you are a better man than Gans or any of the old timers. As for the present day fighters, you can handle all the lightweights and welterweights." Leonard will pass the cane the cane along to his successor at the head of the lightweight division.
