I don't know this but the hotel thing I can imagine is pretty normal for a smaller fight. Vegas hotel rooms aren't that expensive because if they can get you in their hotel you end up in their casino, restaurants etc.

I can't see the PPV numbers being great. Khan-Salita didn't do well. Obviously was no where near as strong a fight to us but to the general public it was Khan vs. a foreigner at a decent time as opposed to at 4 in the morning and even though this had a stronger undercard it took the hit of losing the Klitschko fight which made it seem less value

 

They've learned their lesson after the Mosley vs Mayorga farce..... and people complaining about special treatment being given to GBP.

 

So how do you get on the list to be offered these free tickets or is it a case of you book a hotel room here is your free boxing tickets?

 

They like you to be a certain standard of guest, ie. likely to spend money in the casino during your stay.

Johny Ragarse from Dagenam who hasn't stayed at the hotel before and has booked a package deal with Lunn Poly isn't likely to get free tickets with his room.

 

Well that was their attitude, but the second half of this year has seen Marquez v Diaz (good fight but never PPV) and Mosley v Mora at $50 a piece, so they are falling back in to their old habits. Funnily enough, Pascal v Hopkins was originally intended to be a Showtime PPV, but they knocked that idea on the head presumably when they realised nobody would pay for it. Khan won't fight on PPV in the states unless he fights Pac or Mayweather. I can't see him getting on a PPV undercard, he's probably too big for that.

Watch Casino. It takes about 3 days, and while it doesn't deal with boxing specifically, it explains how Vegas casinos would offer freebies in the 70's. If you are a renowned regular gambler or businessman at a venue, who bets big, sometimes wins but often loses, then the house like you and will offer you free rooms and food on the proviso (or at least the intention) you spend your time in Vegas betting at their casinos. I'd imagine back then, right through to today, free fight tickets would be offered as incentives for big wig businessmen to entice them gamble at their casino, and fight venue. If you run the Mandalay Bay and offer Mr kawasaki free ringside seats for Khan v Maidana, he takes them, and spends the rest of the weekend losing money on your tables. That also explains why so many of the small time Friday Night Fight cards are on Indian/Native american gaming land.

I am stunned by those Darch v Agbeko figures though. Only 757 of nearly 12,000 paying to get in.:nut

 

So where do they make their money from and do the other tickets go to celebs and VIPs??

Though the amount you have to spend in the casino to reach this hallowed status sounds as if it wouldnt be anymore profitable than just buying them.

True that but that is more to do with GBP and HBO being close.

HBO didn't want to buy Mosley/Mora so GBP had to put it on PPV. HBO said they would produce the PPV for them. Remember that Mosley/Mora didn't have a countdown show or 24/7 or anything.

When HBO don't want a TR fight, Arum puts his own PPVs on (like the Donaire/Sidorenko).

Amir Khan sold out his fight in the UK against Salita.

 

Assuming Kos's figures are correct, then in terms of the % of people who watched the fight live and actualy bought a ticket:


Darchinyan vs Agbeko: 6% in the venue paid for a ticket
Berto vs Quintana: 28% in the venue paid for a ticket
Williams vs Cintron: 67% in the venue paid for a ticket

You can see, only 6% of people paid to watch the Agbeko fight live in the stadium while Williams' fight had a significantly higher proporiton. I find that quite shocking.


Assuming only 20% of those who attended the Khan fight live bought a ticket (just less than the % Berto reached), and average sold ticket prices were $100, then that means the Khan fight brought in $135k in ticket sale revenue. :!:

I think with all the promotion costs and expenses, GBP probably made a loss hosting the Mandalay Bay event. Remember, the majority of HBO money would have gone directly to Khan on his $1.3m per fight deal.

IMO this probably seals the deal for GBP to agree to his next fight being in the UK. Khan sells out arena's in his home country. I can't see how GBP make money if they sell such few tickets and Khan takes home the Sky PPV share.
