Anyone know why Calzaghe has decided against fighting Pavlik?

Calzaghe was chasing a fight against Pavlik a lot before the Hopkins fight. After the Hopkins fight, he was still mentioning Pavlik as his main target, but was also including Jones in the equation. Later, he only talked about fighting Jones and now he says he doesn't want to fight Pavlik at all. Meanwhile, Pavlik seems to want to fight Calzaghe more and more. He wasn't very keen on the idea of fighting Calzaghe last year but he came round to it and these days, Calzaghe is his main target. So, what has changed? I can see why Pavlik might want to fight Calzaghe, but why doesn't Calzaghe want to fight Pavlik anymore? He said he had no interest in a fight against Jones before, but now Jones is the man he wants to fight.

Why did Calzaghe change his mind? Why has he decided against fighting Pavlik? Anyone know?

Anyone think there should be a ban on starting new threads that cover exactly the same subject as dozens already in existence?

I might start a new thread and include a poll....

I read all those threads about Calzaghe and Pavlik and no one provided an answer to this question. The only thing people are writing in those threads is "Pavlik KO 4 Calzaghe", "Calzaghe would murder Pavlik", "Calzaghe is ducking Pavlik" or "Pavlik is awful; Calzaghe shouldn't fight him".

No one has answered the question though: Why did Calzaghe change his mind about fightig Pavlik? Do you have an answer? Do you know why?

Calzaghe makes more money fighting Jones than Pavlik? Didn't he know that would be the case earlier? Have his priorities changed or did he think he'd make more money fighting Pavlik earlier?

Yes. Pavlik did terrible numbers with Lockett, he isn't really a PPV draw. Calzaghe might be a bigger name than Lockett amongst hardcore fans, but still nobody knows who the **** he is to boost those numbers.

pavlik may be young and in his prime, but despite jones being ko'd twice, he's still a household name in the states. definately a much, much bigger name than pavlik. bigger name, more money.

Well, if the Pavlik v. Lockett fight made Calzaghe realise that he'd make less money fighting Pavlik than Jones, since Calzaghe is after the biggest purse, it seems the answer is clear - he is fighting Jones because he can make more money by fighting him. He is no longer interested in fighting Pavlik because it wouldn't make him as much money as he had previously thought.

    Thank you.

All great fighters are the same in a sense that they all want that one big payday before they retire.

Probably. You also can't underestimate the fact Joe is 36, and he probably doesn't feel like a "tough" fight. He probably felt like he's slipping as is pretty evident, especially in the Hopkins fight, so he'll play it safe. I'm sure he feels he could beat Pavlik, but why not make it much easier for himself against another old guy?

Then you factor in the money, and we'd probably all do the same thing.

Its money. Or rather - its ... well, yeah - its money.

Roy has been trying to built a run at lower weights to see if he could score a last money fight.

So this is a money fight for both. However, Calzaghe also has his precious '0' to defend and I think that added motivation will be decisive.

BUT!!! don't sleep on Jones.. Tarver (who is an average fighter) for some reason had Jones' number. This may be a long day on the job for Joe.

There could be lots of reasons why he decided not to fight Pavlik. However, I doubt money was a factor. Despite him being a household name, Roy Jones was never really a big draw. There isn't a ton of interest from Americans in seeing Jones fight. Calzaghe would probably make comparable money fighting either guy.

My understanding is that Calzaghe would fight Jones in Wales in front of a sell out crowd of fifty thousand. There's a lot of money in that particularly if Jones only gets the short end of it, with Calzaghe being the big draw and with Jones not having many better options out there.

I know that Kessler's team are in talks with RJJ's team about staging a fight in Copenhagen. So Jones does have options and those options will help him in negotiating his share of the money whichever fight happens.
