Anyone know why Calzaghe has decided against fighting Pavlik?

Pavlik = High Risk, Low Reward....

Jones = Moderate Risk (at this stage of his career), High Reward.

I think that once joe begins negotiations with RJJ (who has said he will not fight joe unless it is a 2 fight deal, one in wales and the next in the US), he will realize that getting a fair deal is not possible. he will have wasted half a year trying, and then will have to go back and find another challenge, at which time pavliks people will insist on a lot more $$, and joe may be SOL. he may ending up fighting the cobra....

    Well break it down chronologically.

    1) Calzaghe calls out Pavlik numerous times, also says fighting Roy Jones would be a let down.

    2) Kelly fights Lockett trained by father Enzo Calzaghe; Lockett is beaten badly within 3 rounds and is severly outclassed.

    3) Joe now says he wants to fight Roy and not Pavlik.

    4) Frank Warren says Joe should fight Pavlik, Joe splits from Frank Warren.

Obviously Joe got scared. He saw what happened to Lockett and he backed off and I am now not a fan of him. Hopefully Roy can cause the upset and defeat Joe anyway.

Pavlik would more than likely want Calzaghe to come back down if they fight, I dont see it happening at 175 it would be at 168 or even 170, But right now Joe should focus on maximizing his gross before a big fight with Pavlik, there are a few fights that would make him some cash before he has to step in there with the young Lion.
let the fight sizzle its going to happen sooner or later, stop crying already cus the fight isnt this weekend.

I think Calzaghe started having doubts after the Pavlik/Taylor rematch. After his own miserable performance against BHop the doubt got worse. The Lockett beat down sealed the deal.

Pretty easy to extrapolate that from this interview. Pay particular attention around the 6:53 mark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWDtzdAYTOA

Easier option(very popular if you know anything about Calzaghe) and more money.

Simple... Jones is a comparable reward/lower risk fight, and that wasn't always the case. Pavlik has improved a lot within the last year, and Joe's age is catching up to him.

It's an easier fight for big money. Did some of you expect Joe to start taking challenges NOW?

Money and because he sees in Pavlik a young and hungry champion who wants to take him down.

    (1)

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$,

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$,

    and more

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

    (2)

    Legacy.

While most serious fans would prefer to see him face Pavlik, to the casual fan and the general public, Roy Jones Junior is a much bigger name.

And twenty years from now, even closer followers of the sport will only see the name and not the date.

(On this forum, I still see many who overcredit Holmes for Ali, Tyson for Holmes, Holy for Foreman, and Norris for SRL).

    He has his serious-fan victories.

(Lacy was a more significant victory than Pavlik would be. And that is also true for even BHop )

So Joe is looking now to his broader-based legacy.

    And did I mention $$$ ?

    My guess:

-Jones is willing to fight in England
-He won't have to offer Jones an even split of the proceeds
