Fellas, For some reason or another, I rarely ever hear an old-timer like myself ever mention the 1988 WBC title fight at 140 pounds between Roger Mayweather and Harold Brazier that was fought on the undercard of "Hearns-Barkley1." WTF? I have a copy of the card on hand and, I love it too..... Brazier was aging but in great shape for a guy well into his 30s and fighting at 140 pounds... He did put some ass whup on champion Mayweather..... However, in the end, Roger Mayweather got the nod.... I too, was pulling for the "Black Mamba" in the end..... This fight was an epic 140 pound classic that often gets shunned.... It pisses me off, too....... Truly a great fight on the world class level....... Who recall's this fight from '88???:huh:good:hey:thumbsup MR.BILL:hat
Yey this is an underrated fight this was a canditate for FOTY, this was a close fight. I remember my buddy Efren Chavez lost to Fabrice Benichou on the undercard, and Gloria Estefan cheered him up by giving him a kiss hahahahha!
I was both shocked and stoked when "The Barker" closed the show on "The Hitman" in round 3..... deal:bbb MR.BILL:hat
Very surprised that ko came out of nowhere, and Tommy was beating him up bad. I thought they were almost ready to stop it.
They were, too...... That fight would've been halted by the doctor between rds 3 & 4...... Barkley had to KO Hearns in round 3...... MR.BILL:deal
It was a good close competitive fight, but at the end of the day Harold Brazier was a little too Clottey-ish in his approach. He just didn't let his hands go enough when he had to. He'd do well to come on late in rounds but he'd spend too much of the first two minutes of every round covering up. It would not have been a robbery if Brazier got the decision, but Mayweather deserved it imo. (Had him up by a point).
I didn't like the way Mayweather was slumping in his corner late in the fight. I was thinking that Roger was gonna quit.. But he hung in there to get the nod? Mayweather then would slice and dice Vinny Paz in Nov. on the undercard of "Leonard-Lalonde" before quitting against Chavez in May of '89 on regular HBO..... MR.BILL:bbb
Roger was ready to go there towards the end. Which makes it all the more disappointing for Harold. He had that fight in his grasp if he just pushed on the accelerator a bit more when he had to. That said, Harold spent himself too with a few of his late flurries, and probably didn't have it in him to push the issue much more than he did. I do think he could have done a LITTLE more though.
Brazier was a full-time auto body worker from Indiana and trained on his off time. Still, he looked to be in great shape for a 140 pounder who was up at age 34 or so in 1988. He was an active dude in the ring, so by being active must've helped out to a great degree. But them 34 yrs had to be a factor since Roger Mayweather was only like age 27 and in his prime...... MR.BILL:hat:bbb
I definitely saw the fight, but can't remember much about it.. Its been over 22 years and I was only maybe 13 then. Both Harold Brazier and Roger Mayweather were two men that I grew up watching a lot of though. There was an ample amount of experience in the ring that evening, as both guys were seasoned professionals.. I saw Harold Brazier fight in person once in Chicago.
After this bout they found Mayweather passed out in the hallway outside his hotel room door. It was utter exhaustion. Scartissue
That is one 140 pound title fight that often gets overlooked......... I have a tape from '88 as it occurred.......... Cheers....... MR.BILL
I actually have this fight on my watch list on youtube. I'm sure I saw it at the time but don't remember much. I was a big Brazier fan. He was on ESPN a ton, pulled some upsets and gave a good account of himself. Worked his way from a club fighter to a world class fighter. I recall him being outclassed by Whitaker and/or Meldrick Taylor, but other than that, he could go with just about anybody. Never a big fan of Mayweather, although he was very good at 130.
I thought Roger Mayweather was drained and weak at 130 to 135 pounds... At 140, Roger seemed to take a punch better without folding like a lawn chair........ But his luck ran out in 1989 when he rematched J.C. Chavez......... I lost focus on Roger after he was KO'd by Rafael Pineda on HBO in around 1991......... He was shot by then......... MR.BILL
