Does anyone remember New York based heavyweight contender Ellijah Tillery? Elijah was the first man to beat decent fighter Mike Dixon .. He faced off in two very notorious bouts with Riddick Bowe. The first was a strange affair with Tillery blowing kisses at Bowe and ending up over the top ropes on the end of the round with Bowe lying on top of him... Tillery was a top sparring partner for Tyson , Tyrell Biggs and Carl Williams at his peak, and was always in fabulous shape.. Tillery is 50 years old now and faced a few good men.. Anyone remember him??
He will always be remembered for the first Bowe fight, and being throttled from behind:hey by Newman. If memory serves me right, he was not without talent, but lacked the dedication to make it to the top.
I remember him. Tillery was a lose screw. He tired to kick Riddick Bowe, then Bowe's manager Rock Newman got hold of Tillery neck from from behind the ropes.
I remember him and the Bowe fights.I also remember Greg Page talking about how Elijah got him ready for Marty Monroe years ago.
I remember him -he fought out of Albany, NY, and I was living up in Albany in 94-95. He had some good potential and posted some good wins, his record is not indicative of his experience because he put in hundreds of rounds in sparring... which was his problem. Tillery fought like a sparring partner. He never learned to punch through a man. He pulled his shots and laid off after applying some pressure. He was boxing's idea of the developmentally disabled. I thought that the first fight with Bowe started off pretty well for him -he pawed a bit, but then would let loose with nice shots to Bowe's soft sides and I think that a right hook to his ribs hurt Bowe. Bowe then turned on the heat and Tillery knew that his attempt to catapult himself into real contention went up in smoke --he knew he was outgunned. That explains the rest of it for me.
Yeah, "Phoenix Steele" I think he kicked Bowe or something like that in a 1990s match I was bouts n my early to mid 20s. He had guts! MAD - MIKE -
I remember watching a few bouts like the Dixon match on USA Tuesday night fights around 1990. Tillery looked a bit like Muhammad Ali facially, and tried to box the part as well. Dixon was an undefeated prospect if I recall, and Tillery floored him enroute to a 6 or 8 round decision. Later I saw him fight Riddick Bowe, and saw him try to kick Riddick during the match. Tillery was a fighter, who looked like he had potential, but in the end, turned out to be a journeyman.
Yeah, I beleive they fought twice, and the first one I think, was where Tillery started using dirty tactics.
Yes , just as Bowe starts to find his measure , Tillery blew Bowe his second kiss (he blew a kiss during the instructions) then as Bowe flicked an extended arm slap towards Ellijahs forehead, Tillery Kicked Riddick around the knee area.. Riddick skipped towards a terrified looking Tillery and slung a hip jerking right hander .. which Tillery tried to avoid by leaning right back into the ropes.. Rock (tag team ) newman then appeared behind Ellijah and restarined him while Bowe slammed him out of the ring over the ropes landing wayyyy down amongst the press row.. When they announced that the fight was declared a dq in favour of Bowe .. A brave looking Tillery (hiding behind 200 security guards) waved his hands as though he felt he should have been awarded something in his favour.. He made himself on this occasion look an ass.. To Riddicks credibility he gave Tillery a rematch and gave him a proper spanking in 4 rounds.. hurting the NY heavy badly.. Ohhh Those were the days........
Tillery's rant after the Bowe fight was great. "I wasn't hurt, my recuperation powers are tremendous- amazing. His heart ain't no bigger than a mustard skin see anyway".
Rock Newman was a real *******. He would have fit right in as a manager in the WWF during the 80's, right along Captain Lou Albono and the rest of those mooks. I can remember him starting a fight with Ray Mercer's manager once at ringside. I think he was also largely responsible for Bowe's decision to throw the WBC title in the trash and avoid Lennox Lewis. If this is indeed the case, then he did his fighter no favors, because it essentially left a scar on his career profile forever.
I found it shocking that Ellijah was 50 years old.. People get old quick these days... LOL.. I saw a recent photo of Renaldo Snipes today. He looks like a lickle old man. I think Carl Williams was on the same photo.. He looked awesome.. Old timers were the best.. !! LOL
