There once was was a fighter that could at best be described as a trial horse that had a terrible propensity to bleed but was about as easy to knock down as a rhinoceros and was famed for it in his day, as there's always a novelty for fighters that can absorb inhuman punishment without wilting.

Now he originally showed himself capable of doing this feat all the way down at light heavyweight against well known fighters like Denis Andries and Mark Kaylor, but he would inexplicably balloon up to over 215+ pounds to continue his career absorbing terrible beatings against far larger and harder hitting men. Ringing any bells?

This man literally amazes the beyond well experienced Gil Clancy, who says he's never seen another man, besides George Chuvalo, absorb such punishment.

Now, what's your opinion? Over hyped rantings by Clancy or is this mystery man I've made this thread about actually showing a great chin here?

In the beginning he states in Howe's previous fight- is when he took the most punishment? Not this one?

Overall I've been cool with Clancy commentating. One particular fight was Hop vs Jones. He felt Hop could've done some things different. I think he said..

Clancey " Bernard is gonna watch this fight tomorrow and see what he did wrong and ask his team to get a rematch. When a fighter does that to me I tell them, what do you mean, I just got him for you."

Randall "Tex"Cobb is the 1st name that popped in my mind. Holmes hit him with everything he had, Cobb just continued to take it. The fight that was so brutally one sided it cause Howard Cousell to stop announcing boxing matches...... And talk about being hysterical on the air... That night I don't think its possible to be worse than Cousell was.

So does anyone think that Howe is demonstrating a cheat chin here? No one has answered that very pertinent question... I'm legitimately curious if people think Clancy was just rambling or making a good observation...

To be honest I don't remember Jaime Howe at all. He must not have been even a fringe contender at the lower weights.

There were some decent LHW's who went up to HW like Pancho Carter and Everett "Big Foot" Martin. They were better than Howe at ANY weight.

    Yeah, overhyped

Howe went down from a looping overhand right midway through the fight.

Chuvalo would have gone the full distance without being dropped, and been competitive with Stewart

Larry Merchant was becoming an SOB and calling fights as they were....he forgot his job was to keep a fight interesting for the fans sake but he couldn't do that towards the end....IMO Cosell quit for the same basic reason except it was one serious mismatch instead of bunch of lesser ones...Holmes wasn't the hardest hitter but he hit hard enough to damage another big man and it was this fight in Cosell saw the lack of care for an overmatched fighters health and well being for the sake of what to prove he had the chin to take it??? I agreed with his sentiment Holmes was not fading and Cobb never hit hard enough to get a 1 punch Rocky KO why let the battering continue? and that is what that fight was a 15 rd beating...Ironically though I think 6mos after this fight Cobb fought for the PKA superheavyweight championship and took a beating their also.
