When looking over this guys record and seeing all of his DQ losses, where the bout simply wasn't going his way and he fouled out, reminded me of things I've read about George Godfrey. They've even got similar dimensions! Remarkable.

Dixon really did fight quite the laundry list of heavyweight prospects of his time...

Tua Toia, Lionel Butler, Larry Donald, Tony Tucker and Lance Whitaker...

Man, for some reason I've got a soft spot for obscure old fights that no one else has probably popped into a VCR or otherwise digested in 30 years. Better than watching something on youtube that's been viewed 15,000,000 times.

He fought often at the Forum. I saw him many times on television but I can't remember if I ever saw him live.

I remember him... but why you gotta be throwing my man Christjohn under the bus? It was bad enough I couldn't get one response on his Appreciation Thread...and now this.

Back in the 90s Dixon was viewed as just another crude, but, hard-punching contender who never really had any major impact. Certainly never cracked the top 10-20 fighters. But, re-watching him now, I don't see that he looks any less skilled than recently ranked fighters like Dilian Whyte. Just another example demonstrating the decline of the heavyweight division over the last 20 years.

What do you hold primarily responsible for the decline of heavyweight boxing, Bert?

He got done in one round by the same Tony Tucker that Herbie Hide demolished. Whyte is way better than this guy.

How would he have done against Corbett?

He would have no chance regardless of the 75+ pound weight advantage, obviously. Lets me "classic" about this shall we?

I'd be more interested in Sullivan vs Sullivan - Obed vs John L.

And I wouldn't put my money on John L for sure

I wish I knew. No good trainers, fighters more concerned with protecting their unbeaten record than developing as fighters, a lack of any discipline to show up in top condition have all played a part. And, when there has been exceptions to the rule like Wlad Klitschko (well schooled, always in peak condition) he fights a safety first style against fighters who for the most part have no chance of winning. There is no drama in watching set up exhibition after set up exhibition. It has been painful to watch.
