The two tiny terrors Michael Carbajal and Humberto Gonzalez brought the spot light on
to the neglected light fly division, with a trilogy of fights.

Carbajal is on the right against Miguel Banda. Here are Carbajal & Gonzalez in later years.

Carbajal won the first 1993 fight by 7th rd ko in a fight he was clearly losing.
Gonzalez won a bitterly contested return,in94 by a split dec, but he had to survive a bad cut over his eye caused by a head butt. Gonzalez won the rubber later in the year by majority dec in a scrap in which both were cut by heads colliding. Carbajal became the first light fly to earn a million dollars for a fight. His nick name was "Little Hands Of Stone" after his idol Roberto Duran.

I saw the second fight live. Had a nice wager on Gonzalez at 3-1 odds and nearly fainted when I saw that he was cut.

I remember losing $ on Chiquita in the 1st fight. Great battle. Carbajal got off the floor twice to KO Gonzalez. The 2nd fight was sort of anticlimatic. Chiquita boxed him to a decision.

Carbajal is one of those that makes me wonder what might have been if not for distractions outside of the ring.

True. I got the impression that the gang life and the street life had a hold on Carbajal. He had a ton of talent and maybe could be been a crossover star.

he was great , but he brawled too much. I wish he would have been more of a boxer at times.. I liked him.

He definitely held on to that ethos in a big way. It was widely known that he was an active particpants in the the Carbajal gang with ties to the Sinola drug cartel even at his peak. I think their have been a drug shooting in his front yard. He also did not have a reverse gear.

A good friend of mine grew up in the same town as the Carbajals. They were not to be trifled with.

That said, he could still be a helluva fighter and this trilogy did wonders for the little guys even if the fights were not 100% scintillating and the verdicts of two were considered controversial by some.
