If it was a case of judges getting it wrong, then why wasn't an official protest lodged? That's exactly what happened in the Taekwondo, and the protest was upheld.

Kenny Egan didn't make such a big deal over it.

Yes, that happened, but I've seen it happen all the time since the new scoring system came in. I reckon they simply push the wrong button by mistake.

Healy i'm just across the water from ya and was really wanting the lad to win,but although I was pissed off with the scoring I still think the overall result was right if not the marking, and ive watched it twice.

Im watching it a second time, have it after one round 1-0 to the Chinese instead of 2-0 like the judges

Egan landed nothing in the first worth a point

Off topic but is this lad any relation to Joe Egan. (Mike Tyson's old sparring partner and a pretty good amateur in his day)

No he's not AFAIK. His brother Willie was a decent AM. Anyway, without getting into it too much, I've watched the fight 5 times. When I watched it live I was disappointed as an Irishman and as a boxing fan. I didn't think 'total stitch up' but I did think 'heavy bias'.

I then had a second look after all the talk of a robbery. My feelings were pretty much the same.

I work as a journalist and I always do my best to be objective when watching fights I'm paid to cover. I've since watched the fight a further 3 times. Taking off the Irish goggles, the Egan goggles, the indignation goggles. I think Egan won the fight by 6 points. I'll give a bit of leeway for the judges because I've had the benefit of hindsight but there is still a discrepancy in the judging to what actually happend.

The judges were just quicker to score the Chinese lad a point than they were Egan.
Was it a mass conspiracy. No. Was it a fair fight regarding judging. No.

It's not an out and out robbery but it's not as easy as saying it was all impartially judged either.

At a guess I would say the judges spent more time watching the shots the Chinese threw and waiting for them to land (or come close to) so they could score them than they did watching the fight as neutral observers

Fair play to Kenny (who I have always found to be a very honest and likeable bloke) for showing a wee bit of class when it would have easy to be carried away and accuse people of a stitch up. He's said he accepts the decision wholly but that he is still sick about what happend. Fair play to him because I know I'd find it hard to be that magnanimous in defeat in an Olympic final under those circumstances
