This thing was on ESPN a few nights ago. It was pretty cool. A lot of footage of the 2 fighters that I have never seen before including cameras on them when they were training for the fight and all. Not that we didn't all already know this but man Ali was completly shot for that fight. They showed his workouts and he couldn't even hit the speed bag. He'd land like 4 or 5 shots on it and miss and have to stop the bag and start over. They said that when he took his physical to get licensed for the fight, he missed when trying to touch his nose and couldn't stand on one leg.
I saw it. Some of that training footage made it really clear that the people around Ali should not have let him fight, but then, how do ya stop Ali from doing what HE wants?
I happened to catch it and didn't even know it was one. It's amazing how people will let anything happen when big money is involved. There was no way Ali should have taken that fight. The speed bad moment was the worst. The sparring footage showed him getting pretty much beat up. They said he made the statement that - he was trying to get use to getting hit. Crazy.
I agreed with Pachecho thru most of it. One quote I loved was how Ali let sparring partners beat on him to toughen him up and Pachecho said you cannot strenghthen your kidneys. The rope a dope served him well against Foreman but against Lyle and Shavers who might have been the hardest hitters he ever faced he let them beat on him and took theyr best. That is why Ali has parkisons. The Holmes and Berbick losses were beating a dead horse. Anything leading up to the Thrilla in Manilla probably would not have done to him what has been done. Like Pachecho said he should have retired in Manilla.
Larry worked as a chief sparring partner for Ali, and they did rounds together over the years. Ali was just in terrible shape for that fight, the disease had already got to him in a big way, and I do not for the life of me understand why he was put through so many rounds with a young, fresh ATG in the state he was. It was clear from the beginning he was not going to win. Larry Holmes needs to be forever grateful to Ali, without Ali or Frazier, Larry Holmes likely would not have been the champion he was. The sparring and experience both Ali and Frazier gave to Larry was more than he could ever ask for :smoke
Ali would have had a hardtime with Holmes in his prime why in his upper thirtys out of shape and damaged why would he be allowed to fight/
A lot of this movie was probably just propaganda to discredit Holmes' win over Ali. Larry Holmes beat his ass. End of story. If Ali was sick or whatever he shouldn't have taken the fight.
So you are saying that what the movie said was not true? That Holmes beat the best version of Ali or even something close to it?
You could also turn that around and say that Ali needs to be forever grateful to Larry Holmes - Holmes could have killed Ali in that ring on that night, but he had the decency to go easy on the guy. Just a point I felt was worth making. Holmes gets a lot of stick for his so-called attitude but the one thing people forget about Ali-Holmes was just how merciful old Larry was, this should be noted.
I saw it and it was a disgrace for once i totally agreed with pacheco...........the fact they hadhim in the ring a year later against Berbick was even more disturbing.
Ali had already developed parkinson during this fight. It's sad to see how greedy the people who let Ali fight like that.
