Anyone see the Donald Curry/Marlon Starling fights?

The first was the lesser of the two by a good deal. At that point I don't believe Curry had reached the heights he had in the second, and Starling seemed to have his number. Unfortunately for Starling, he was a lazy headcase in that fight who stepped off the case at all the wrong junctures, costing him the decision.

The rematch was far better, providing some of the best technical boxing in recent Welterweight history. Up there with a fight like Whitaker/McGirt I, although fought more on the inside. Clear win for Curry here. I don't think he's had a more conclusive performance.

 

Starling clowned away the first fight but when he got serious in the second Curry was simply the stronger and better man. The rematch was a superb technical fight. For the longest time Curry was the only fighter at 147 that would have beat Moochie.

 

He didn't fill it in and a part reason was staying at 147 too long. I don't think he quite had the durability to be the second coming of Ray but he sure had some talent.

 

Watch him vs the speedster Nino LaRocca for some good perspective.

I have # 2 on tape from '84 with Curry's WBA title on the line...... Curry W15 Starling............ A tactical fight fought with skills...........

Curry just had Starling's number.........

As usual good post JT ... IN this match up Curry simply was a half step better ... Starling was a very good fighter but Curry matched up well against him straight up ... then when Curry lost to Honeygan and Starling took Lloyd apart we saw how styles mean everything ...

 

By Feb. 1989, we CLEARLY saw how two guys could go off in opposite directions......... Marlon Starling was hammering the **** outta Lloyd Honeyghan on HBO and Donald Curry was being out-fought by Rene Jacquot on CBS TV........
